A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

Im just starting to dive into flash photography and I have been wanting to experimnet with grids (honeycombs). I use a softbox and fortunatly both softbox mounted grids and speedlight mounted grids are on holiday sale. Asking for input about which to purchase. My thinking is the speedlight grid doesnt require a softbox but is it as good and will I ever use a speedlight without a softbox?

Appreciate any thoughts or education on the matter.

A grid will control light spill, but it won't change the quality of light. A close, gridded, softbox will put soft light on your subject. A speedlight will put hard light on your subject

If you're doing most of your lighting with softboxes, a speedlight grid won't be very useful
