Data Hoarder

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

I am wanting to make a server that can also play older games at 1080p. I was thinking of a lower powered 11th gen like 11400 for use with my 1060 6gb video card. No AAA newer than 2020

I would be using Windows as an OS.... explained later

I have 5 hard drives and no dvd/cd rom.

LSI or equiv SAS controller is in the future when I run out of sata connections.

Here is where I need the help...........

I would like to leave this computer in the closet and access this from other rooms like Living room and office. What do i need to be able to access this without using a whole new computer? Is there anyway i can use just keyboard, video, mouse and have the OS be served on the server?

It sounds like what you want it some sort of HDMI over CAT6 cable with USB over the same cable as well.

I know you can push HDMI (or displayport) a very long way over CAT6 cable with the correct converters - I'm not sure if any of those solutions include remote USB as well - you'd think some do.

Any other solution means you need other computers at each endpoint.
