What are some ways to that software developers gain clients? The guys did a project for me and it going great, so I know they do good work.

We just happen to have a conversation off the topic of my project and they were telling me it been slow lately so I offer to help find them projects for a fee off the top and they said sure.

I wasn't expecting it, I was half serious but I see a good opportunity to make some good money off this. Can y'all give me some advice on how to navigate through this endeavor!

The best way is to be in a community of people who often need this kind of services. People who own companies, or want to be entrepreneurs.

The mais problema you will find is to sell their product since you dont understand about it. I recommend you study about what he does, not the programming itself, but about what those languages does and why they are used for.
