Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.

It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.

Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

Warning: Working with electricity can result in injury, property damage, or even death if it is not done properly. Please keep this in mind while assisting others. If you are not sure about what you are doing, hire a licensed professional.

Finally decided to get smart RGB lighting in my flat, which system do I choose?

I found that most devices that I want, that are affordable enough and that are available where I live all have the words Zigbee and Tuya in the product listing title. What's a good way to control them? I'm overwhelmed with the amount of options available and with how involved it can get. If you have experience with such devices, some advice would be much appreciated.

One non negotiable requirement is that it has to work locally. I'm ok with the cloud being used for setup or recovery, but the actual operation of the system must always take place locally, even if there is a stable Internet connection established.

Controlling devices via the Internet is nice to have, but not necessary at all. A good and intuitive android app is nice to have, but 99% of control is intended to be done via physical switches and dials, so the app will mostly be used for setup.

A popular option seems to be home assistant, how seamlessly would Tuya/Zigbee devices integrate with it and what hardware would I need?

Home Assistant and a Zigbee dongle. I am pretty sure you'll use it for much more once you get into it.

You can run it on a Raspberry Pi or similar or NUC mini pc if you want more resources.
