Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.

It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.

Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

Warning: Working with electricity can result in injury, property damage, or even death if it is not done properly. Please keep this in mind while assisting others. If you are not sure about what you are doing, hire a licensed professional.

Hi all,

I'm in the very early stages of potentially setting up a business in home automation.

I have experience working with my hands in a similar field however I have a lot to learn about ZigBee, zwave and RF technology as a whole. This is my first port of call but I've taken my first steps.

If anyone could direct me toward resources that might be of benifit on my learning journey, I'd really appreciate it.

With all of the networking required in home automation you should look into learning more about doing things like setting up mesh networks and get ready to offer support plans as a part of it. Set up a small home server and get into HAOS.

I'm currently taking the comptia network +.

I also plan on doing some RF courses in the new year as this sort of knowledge will definitely come in very handy.

Thanks for your comment I'll be sure to check out HAOS👍
