Wait, I thought the whole point of threads is that it was built on Activity Pub technology. Why haven't they had hashtags from the beginning?

It wasn't “built on Activitiy Pub”, and I don't believe they will ever implement the protocol.

Lemmy is Activity Pub too and doesn't have hashtags, it's a pretty flexible protocol. But realistically they will probably bolt on AP later on, doesn't have to be there from the get go. WordPress has AP integration now too and it's just a plug-in for example.
