Relevant Onion article- Nation Could Have Sworn Russell Brand Was Already Convicted Sex Offender

It's almost a Mandella Effect thing. I thought he was MeToo'd at the very beginning. Maybe it's just how sleazy he comes across.

Yeah, he’s modeled his whole persona around looking and acting like a generic rockstar clichè. And his movie career more or less fizzled out (apart from animated work) well over a decade ago, so I can see how people might’ve just assumed he fell off back then for nefarious reasons rather than just being a shit actor with the range of an indoor cat.
