This isn't actually new, but yes, it is infuriating. It's also why I haven't bought an HP printer. Well, at least since I found out about this issue back in 2017 or so.
I have an HP printer (was a gift) but it's never been connected to any external network so there's no way to disable or update anything on it. I imagine these versions won't be available to purchase anymore. I saw many printers on the market requiring you to keep a subscription to operate, which feels so dystopic.
