A game which I have started numerous times, and then bounced off of due to the archaic control interface. One of these days I'm going to have to knuckle under and learn how to interact with it, as the concept is cool as hell, and I'm sure the controls become intuitive with practice.

Caves of Qud has gotten more approachable than ever, thanks to a complete UI overhaul, gamepad control implementation, and a currently in-beta tutorial that'll arrive in full with the 1.0 launch.

Might be worth going back to once 1.0 launches

gamepad control implementation

That's huge. Every time I tried playing it, it gave me a strong "bedtime game" vibe and I just wanted to play it on my Steam Deck.

As someone who played roguelikes in the 90's then got frustrated with ancient UI/UX, and therefore also bounced several times, I can confirm that the latest efforts and co-operation with Kitfox have really improved things.
My latest efforts had me playing for several hours almost entirely with the mouse and having fun!

(and then I got stuck in the first basement mission with no way to reach the mission objective; that was less fun)

Controls aren't that bad, but i manage to bounce off it too. Maybe a keep unconsciously comparing it to cataclysm.

You need a num pad to do it right i feel. I haven’t used the number pad like that since Final Fantasy 7. But the control remapping works too
