As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades:

I think people greatly misunderstood me here: I'm not arguing FOR it!?! (Though I can see how the language of "hard calls" would lead to that impression, so that's on me). I am merely trying to understand the potential motivations of the actual people who matter, in terms of shaping empires (since apparently the populace no longer does, at least in many places e.g. in both South - and increasingly we are now seeing North also - America). Ofc these are trends not firm facts, e.g. Canada may have its democracy imperilled but it is nowhere close to what seems to be going on inside the USA, or e.g. Brazil.
But ofc I could be way off. In the past we had many different sources of news media outlets, while in the modern world we seem to have far fewer choices, curated for us by oligarchs (so... same as it ever was, but again, with fewer options, so representing a difference in degree rather than in kind). By holding hostage whatever the actual Truth is, and replacing it with their own curated version, they influence societies to such a large degree that the common man (or woman) no longer "matters", by comparison.
And I was thinking that in the past, democracies seem to have been fashionable to those oligarchs. It produced things like cures for various cancers that no amount of individual funding as a patron was going to make happen.
Whereas now... a new, different set of oligarchs no longer seems to want what democracy can provide. Either due to ignorance or... whatever.
But you are right that this is all just a guessing game.

Fascists want what they always want, action on conservative goals: "more for me, less for everyone else", with an ambiguous and dynamic "me group" usually. Sometimes it's just a family clan thing, and it can even be reduced to the "Sovereign Citizen" who's doing a type of solo fascism (ancaps).
A shrinking environment means, for fascists & friends, fewer resources to use for themselves, thus a reason to take even more resources from others. It's the prepper ideology at a large scale - survival of the fittest group by hoarding resources and killing the competition.
The techbro types have their own version of this, as mentioned above with the TESCREAL ideologies.
To summarize this in a different way, ecofascists look at the problem of overshoot (includes global warming) as "how to get rid of the competition in order to reduce the overall damage and thus achieve 'sustainability'".
If you're familiar ideas like the Kaya identity then you understand the very basic:
IMPACT = population size x average individual impact
. Fascists love the high impact living (high consumption, lots of waste and pollution) and want to fix the impact problem by reducing the population size, not the nice lifestyle. This applies proportionally to the rich, the billionaires. Fascist narratives help to outline which population to reduce and which population to preserve (see: "the great replacement" conspiracy theory). This isn't super precise, they constantly redefine groups and there's, of course, a hierarchy or caste system aspect to it, since the rich and privileged depend on the poor and exploited. Techbros hope to achieve fully automated capitalism, so that they no longer depend on the masses. You can guess what happens if that happens.
