By "being a thing" I meant playing a major role. I'd say that started when he declared that he was running for president in 2015.

He played a major role since the 80s. From his discussions on opera, to his central park 8 add, to his many political endorsements.

This isn't new. It's been a carefully orchestrated , multi decade coup in the making. Ala Margaret Atwood
