Andrew Nicholson is still on the payroll of the Portland Trail Blazers and will receive $2.844 million through this upcoming 2023-2024 season. He has been getting paid $2.844 million every year for the past 6 years by the Portland Trail Blazers. He last played in April 2017 for the Brooklyn Nets and put up 2/5/0 in his final NBA game

Pretty sweet deal for Mr. Nicholson. Who are some other retired/out-of-the-league players that are still on a team's payroll? I know John Wall will still be getting paid by the Houston Rockets this season

More of a win for the team than the player, I’m sure Andrew would rather have gotten the entirety contract 4 years ago and optimally use that to invest

In his instance the team benefits more because Nicholson was out of the league after that but that player can also still sign with another team potentially making more over those years than if they weren't waived. If there was no stretch provision Nicholson likely wouldn't have been waived since the team wouldn't have gotten salary cap relief and the only benefit is from opening a roster spot, but keeping him allows them to use him as salary matching in a trade like Bkn did when they traded him to Por.
