As someone who last tried No Man's Sky out about 5 years ago, it looks like it's time to give it another shot.

It wasn't good a few years ago when I tried it, and I ended up refunding it entirely because of the VR. I purchased it again last year and played for an hour or two before putting it back down. I have a whopping 3.8 hours total.

I will give this game another shot due to this major update, and to be honest it's very unfair of me to gripe about this game with under 4 hours total playtime. I absolutely love space games, so this should be right up my alley. I may eventually hop back in VR and give that a shot as well.

My main dislikes are the crafting and collection of materials, but hopefully once I'm over that hurdle I'll see the game as it really is.

Hopefully you'll like it better this time around. I know VR preferences can be very subjective, so I can understand why it may not have worked for you. While I don't know what specifically you didn't like, I will say that on the performance and visual fidelity aspects of VR, they've done some good work over the last year or two. Improvements to the engine and things like DLSS in VR really help it run better.

Regarding the crafting and material collection, I have some good news. From your time with the game, you probably remember the difficulty options of Normal, Survival, Permadeath, and Creative. That last one eliminates all costs and penalties from the game, for people who just want to ~~Netflix~~ warp drive and chill. But, if you don't want to make it too easy, they've since added a ton of granular difficulty controls, most of which are adjustable on the fly. You can make a game that's otherwise normal, but eliminates crafting costs, if that's your preference. You may already be familiar with the settings, but I mention it anyway because a surprising number of people I talk to about the game don't know and have played the game for a long time without realizing they can adjust fine grained difficulty settings.

Thank you very much for your reply, it's very appreciated.

The collecting part just feels tedious and boring, but I just started a new game a few minutes ago and it's not terrible. I've just played so many resource collecting games that it's just annoying to me, but it's not the end-all.

As far as crafting goes I just find it confusing. The tutorial takes you to your damaged ship and it's just weird that you have to click inside your ships cargo space and it's suddenly like a crafting bench. The same goes for the exo-suit. It would've made more sense to build a crafting bench to set nearby and go that route.

I do think I'll get use to the systems in this game, it's just a lot of new territory thrown at me at once. I'm just use to other crafting games, but I do need to be more open to accepting how this game plays.

I do appreciate the mention of the options menu, but I'm just going to play the standard / normal game and learn what to do.

No problem! I'm always happy to help new players to one of my favorite games! 😀 Enjoy your return to the game, and you can always message me if you hit a road block or something.

I've just finished a 2 hour session and I'm enjoying the game. There are a few things that are strange, but I'm slowly figuring things out. I'm getting more use to the inventory and crafting so it's not as frustrating as it was before.
