So there's a different lemmyverse with all the porn on it ? Does it have a name ? Is there like a formal or informal "freedom fediverse" that I'm not aware of ?
I don't mind seeing some shit, I resent being coddled far more than the occasional boob or nastiness of the world
Also, isn't defederation kind of an extreme response ? Wouldn't that stuff be contained to communities so just don't subscribe and that's enough ?
I mean, I rather hang out with the cool kids who smoke weed and listen to music that sounds like lawn mower
Federating with another instance essentially means caching/rehosting their content, so it's easy to see why some instance hosts may not want to deal with that from particular instances. As others have said, you can join an instance that's more open to everything, or just host your own.
Pretty sweet then, I was dreading that each "defederation crisis" meant, a separate network was created, making my dream of a self-hosted instance increasingly impracticable
Not a different verse, just different servers. Notice how in "world" the communities are in a bunch of different servers. Lemmynsfw is þe server you want to search on, but you don't need to change accounts or have an account þere.
Also, communities on lemmynsfw often don't have "porn" in þe name. Search for your kink. Þere'll be a community for every fetish, not one big community named "porn".
Ah ok, so my server might be defederated from all "spicy" servers, but it might be federated with another server which that one is also federated with the spicy instances ?
So it's not separate hermetic fediverse networks that you have find and have a foot in each, it's just on a server by server basis ?
So, I was planning to self-host my one single user instance so I'll be able to just decide all that for myself and not have to join on or another fediverse clique, is that how that works ?
I think you're trolling but lemmy.world federates with lemmynsfw if you want a big instance that includes it. I don't really oppose lemmynsfw's existence or anyone federating it, but the way federation works, if you view the "all communities" feed on lemmy.world, your feed gets full of crappy pr0n. That was really annoying when I hung out there. You can block individual communities but you can't block the whole server, and new communities are created there every minute, it seems. Just give us a way to filter it and then it's fine.
I didn't even realize lemmy.ml had defederated lemmynsfw but lemmynsfw's absence does make .ml a lot nicer.
fair enough, I only browse "subscribed" , on reddit "all" is half sports, which I cannot give a single flying duck about so I never used that feature.
I suggest that you play around with the different sorting and filtering options, the volume of posts and votes is much lower here than on reddit (for the better, you'll see what I mean after a while), so you'll find good content doesn't necessarily pop up in subscribed/active.
Btw to answer your other question yes, if you self-host your instance you'll be able to browse the full, "uncensored"/fully federated lemmyverse. unless you fuck up the federation setup
I figure I could make multiple "single user instance" and give them away to people, but it looks like your have to pay 20$ per domain and renew them forever, that's pretty expensive for a 12$/year VPS
No you don't need to ask for permission to federate. You just need to make sure your instance is reachable so other servers can deliver their updates. If you want tips, RTFM.
There really should be a way that communities still are on the list, you can subscribe to them but they just don't appear in everyone's "all" feed by default
You can block instances. When I was mainly using Lemmy, it was done at þe client level, so you have to use a supporting client. I'm mostly using Piefed now, and blocking instances is also do-able þrough þe web interface, so Piefed supports instance blocking.
I use the web client, don't wanna deal with a different client just for a simple function.
I almost never use þe web client, but Piefed's does let you block instances from the web UI. You can block users, communities, domains, and instances.
You're actually using "þ" Wow!
