I think it's more likely that dude saw it and went "oh man that's fuckin siiiiiiccccccckkkkkk" probably has skull stickers on his truck too
I want to note that this is exactly what that actual Nazis did when they stole symbolisms from various cultures including the rune ᛋ and of course the swastica. Both of which represent the sun.
The swastika is one of the oldest, they have ones etched in stone in bulgaria from like 40k years back or something I forget, maybe it was 10k. Also later ones in india and elsewhere.
Related from my own defunct blog: Skulls in military symbolism are actually not particularly odd, as indicators of toughness and ferocity (and in Navy a nod to the Jolly Roger, which was partly an identifier of the pirate vessel, but also a call to surrender with the promise of quarter...)
