I went through and watched all of Wemby's field goal attempts and turnovers against the Clippers on nba.com (I don't have league pass so I can't actually watch the game, sorry if I'm a box score casual ๐), and here's a few key things I noticed him doing wrong.
- He struggles to read help defense at times. He went straight into Covington attempting a baseline reverse and guarded the ball horribly, showing it straight to where he could block it.
- He sometimes can't keep the ball secure when he gets it in his hands, whether it be off a pass or a rebound. He'll get it and then someone will poke it right off of him.
- He sometimes shoots real long touch shots or floaters when he should be squaring up for an actual jump shot or fadeaway.
- This is the biggest issue I noticed, and maybe it just looked especially bad because of how good the Clippers' perimeter defense is, but I think he telegraphs his passes way too much. You can tell where he's passing to long before he throws the pass which makes it way too easy for the opposing team to play the passing lanes.
I'm not gonna bother to criticize him for losing his dribble or having a streaky jumper, because I think those are things that can easily be worked on.
1, 3, and 4 are issues that just require experience, time, and vet leadership. The latter he has in coaching and retired Spurs, but something that an on court vet would certainly help with.
2 will likely always be a problem. Tall guys are more easily exploited on the dribble. Hell, it happens to KD even to this day and no one can deny his talent.
Or, maybe someone shows Wemby this post!
