Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.

It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.

Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

I've been looking into the various options and don't know which one to pick. Home Assistant seems like the popular choice but it seems really complicated for what I want. Smartthings is interesting because I sort of use the app for my Samsung devices but it's also not available on Amazon or other sites right now.

I've looked into Google and Amazon's hubs but they also don't seem like popular choices.

I'm probably going to keep it simple with on and off commands pretty much being the most complicated thing I'm doing. Is there a straight to the point device I should go with?

I use a combination of Smartthings and Alexa. Alexa automation is very simplistic and limiting, but combining it with smartthings, you can do a lot. There are certainly limitations, but a lot can be overcome by familiarizing yourself with virtual edge devices in smartthings virtual switches and virtual sensors are a great way to effectively allow two way communication between Alexa and smartthings.
