I don't think those are unzipped flies. Looks like they are some sort of weird drawstrings at the belt level that have been tied in bow knots.

I think what OP is asking why they wearing sweatpants for a family photo. Are they incapable to wear pants with a zipper?

And that's comes from family of a guy who recently criticized that medals were displayed in wrong order.
