I would have guessed it’s supposed to sort all comments by age, youngest on top, by first flattening them out of their tree structure.

From what I’ve seen that isn’t what’s happening.

Is it broken or am I misunderstanding it?

Yes, that’s my guess too, but from what I’ve seen it’s not doing that and so I wonder if it’s got a bug.

It seems to work for me - it switches all replies to appear as top-level comments, and sorts everything by "Old."

So when I view this comments section with chat, the comments are clearly not in proper chronological order.

Yours is listed before the one from lazycouchpotato but after the one from me starting “Yes, that’s …”.

It seems maybe the flattening of replies into a single sequence of comments isn’t working properly??

It used to work fine. New comments would appear automatically without you having to refresh the page.

I don't remember if 0.18.1 or 0.18.2 borked it.
