Yeah, it's pretty sweet! There's even a whole sub over at Reddit. But be warned: I once asked politely why they insist on ricing their termux instances - expecting some sincere replies - and I got bullied out of there faster than the Millennium Falcon did the Kessel Run...
Maybe dontnsay ricing
Why? People above ricing now? 🤣
Think about what group of people a word based on "rice" targets?
I'm really not deep enough into that culture to understand what you mean. Either that, or it's that I'm a non native speaker? 😅 Please explain. 🙏 Is it not just a nerdy way of saying "making a Linux desktop environment look fancy"?
"ricing" comes from people "tricking out" Japanese cars by customizing them. I think most people don't think it's saying anything negative about Asians but some people take it that way. I think one similar term that sounds much worse is when people call those same Japanese cars "rice burners". That one sounds derogatory/racist to me
In climbing, we use carabiners. It used to be common to say 'biner or 'biners for short. But my community stopped saying it that way because we were told that it sounded to close to a derogatory term (beaners) that I had never even heard of before.
So to try to be more inclusive, we trained ourselves to not say something that sounded offensive, even though none of us meant it that way. It really isn't that much to ask IMO to use neutral terms when so many exist.
'beaner' is literally a racial slur that I instantly recognized as sounding exactly like what you wrote. Doesn't matter if you've heard of it.
I'm not sure why you're here trying to scold me for this. I explained what you meant and expressed understanding of it.
You get it -- the person above you did not. Apologies if it sounded targeted to you. I was trying to add on to the conversation for the benefit of anyone reading it.
Intent doesn't matter -- impact does. I still have never heard of "beaner" outside of the climbing context but it doesn't matter -- it is recognizable to others and that is enough. Again, I know you get it. But not everyone does, and I'm trying to give an example of the time I learned this.
A lot of people have never heard of ricer outside of the car/Linux context.
Yeah, I kinda am on the same page as you but I do think modern judginess in contexts like this can get to be too much. Practically none of the language changes proposed really bother me, after at least a little time to think about them, I just get a little annoyed when some of the more benign ones seem to be pushed as similar to the other more terrible ones. An example would be "master bedroom". Basically no one would ever naturally think of that as racist or of a racist origin, though it probably is a relic of the slavery era. So while I think it's good to try and move away from the term, if someone told me I shouldn't say it in conversation, I wouldn't find it helpful and I would find it annoying. I think there should be priorities because people do have limited brain space for new replacement terms. I could probably list 20 words that have become unusable in my lifetime so far, and I have no issue with basically all of them, but if every time I say one of the more engrained, less harmful ones, I'm told I shouldn't say it, my human reaction is to get annoyed. If you had approached it a little more softly here I don't think I'd mind at all. Like "Just so you know, this term has origins in being derogatory to Asians" for example. Starting off with "don't say that" without explanation hits much differently imo. So it's partially about priorities and partially about approach for me.
I get that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Yeah master bedroom is a great example -- not as bad as master/slave terminology on networked equipment, but still probably something to change in the long term. But if someone jumped on it in conversation I might get annoyed too.
I appreciate this response. I wish more online interactions with slight disagreements could go exactly like this!
