the marking on top of a capacitor are purpose built weak/failure points so if the cap overheats the pressure can be released there, in a controlled failure, as opposed to becoming a mini-pipe bomb.

Often, I think, its an X, sometimes a manufacturer might use another letter like K or T though.. I dont know why, presumably something with branding.
