I don't like them as a company, but If Discord gives a shit enough to invest in the Linux client to capture more users, Linux is on the right track to grow even more. They don't care about Linux current user base. They want the user base of what it can become.

To late Discord deleted my account and not going back.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Same. If only there were another Discord-like client that my friends were willing to use. I tried getting them onto Stoat, but I'm starting to lose faith that Stoat can become the next Discord.

Try Cinny or Sable (slightly buggier fork of Cinny with more features.) They're Matrix clients that look close enough to discord.

Or Movim, which is an XMPP client

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Or just use fluxer? If you want a discord clone why the fuck are you trying to make a totally different program behave like discord. That defeats the entire purpose of matrix.

Just go use an actual clone.

Moving from discord to fluxer, stoat, etc, is like moving from shitter to bluesky. All centralized platforms will eventually go to shit.

Not of they are self-hostable...? I don't know what the progress is for Fluxer self hosting, but if it comes through like they have 'promised' then I'm excited for it as the next place to go.

I looked into fluxer and it doesn't appear to be federated, meaning you would have to have an "official" fluxer account to interact with the majority of the communities.

[–] noodlesreborn@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Federation and self-hosting are both on the roadmap.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 3 points 1 month ago

Fluxer seems to be the best candidate alternative. Currently AGPL, with plans to provide self-hosting, federation, and E2EE.

Fluxer is sitting RIGHT there looking at you like yer blind. Stoat literally will never go anywhere. Its made zero fucking progress basically since day 1 is ran by idiots and smalls like a scam from a mile away.

The fact anyone has even remotely considered stoat is honestly concerning.

You forgot how stupid that name sounds, Even if they would be on par feature wise nobody would want to switch to STOAT

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

Revolt was definitely a better name

If by "invest" you mean paying one person a few hours weekly to create an Electron app, then there's already plenty of companies doing that. None of which have declared the year of the linux desktop for it. Or maybe all of them, who knows. It's the decade of the year of the linux desktop.
