The insane thing is that we humans just can't not listen to what those kind of people say.

They are professional liars.

The insane thing is that we humans just can’t not listen to what those kind of people say.

I've always wondered that too. If everybody knows someone is lying, why do we have to keep going along with it?

I think part of the problem is they know a lot people want life and entertainment to be the same thing, so they can sell scifi as reality and it's a sure way to get tithes from the faithful.

It's not just about AI, though. This is just an incredibly common phenomenon.

For sure, it's Elon's whole thing. Look at Star Citizen, same thing. Blur the lines between what's achievable and what seems feasible and say you need people's money to make th dream work. Money go brrrrr

Or the Kremlin, or Trump, or ...

[–] sureshot0@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't know if that's a good example, in the US everyone reflexively hates and makes fun of the president no matter who it is. Everything the government says is always considered bullshit no matter what. But for some reason this doesn't apply to CEOs.

-"Trump indicated that the tariffs are going to make the economy ...", "Trump just stated on trut social that the Iran deal ..."

The media sure do listen to your presidents ramblings and social media posts.

...

We don't have the same kind of country you have.

"The media" is owned by our elite. It is in no way reflective of the average person's opinion.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not even youtubers and the like? I mean only the very old watch tv nowadays. In "my" country at least 😨!

[–] sureshot0@discuss.online 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

.... yeah dude. Yeah. Even youtubers.

I am absolutely amazed by your thought process but I'm not going to waste my time reeling.

Yes, youtubers get paid by superpacs and shit like that. Yes youtubers get anonymous donations. Yes youtubers have political agendas.

If you're American and can afford all the equipment for Youtube, you come from a rich family or you have a sponsor.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I made a couple of youtubes once, cost me a microphone for maybe 50€ because I wanted a cordless one for other uses, but a 20€ one would totally do it too. Then mounted it in some FOSS app and upload it for free... Not expensive at all.

I don't know why you're so confused, and condescending? There are loads of youtubers that live off youtube, so you have to learn to cut through the bullshit, but they convey real information, that yes you have to stitch together yourself, knowing it's not perfect. Ukrainian youtubers have their bias, americans theirs etc. There is not a one information pool to get it all from, never have been.

You sound like you only have experience with usa tv and joe rogan like youtubers.

[–] sureshot0@discuss.online 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Sure there are many youtubers who can start out small and scale up, but scaling up involves making those connections I was talking about before. You're eventually going to get approached by sponsors. If your channel discusses political topics, you will probably be contacted by people who want to advertise within those topics. The average person cannot achieve the production quality that the bigger channels can.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sure, but then it's time to dump that person/channel. Or decide it's okay and try to "think" around it (say a video game channel will be pushing hardware and games, not that life-changing IMO).

It can be difficult, but there are "good" people doing their best, and what choice do we have? Discuss, cross check, look out for all types of patterns... Not easy when the Kremlin (and others ofc) has a big budget...

[–] sureshot0@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A few content creators and independent news organizations I used to follow turned out to be funded by Russia, so I’m a lot more skeptical now

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah, and even without the bad actors you can feel the need for monetisation fucking things up. It's a neverending whack a mole game . Stay safe stay sane as they say!

For one thing I think record keeping.

Like. Part of the problem is he's lying to investors. He hasn't ever really cared about what the general public thinks except if it affects what investors think of his product. And it's important to keep records of what he (and the others like him) says because eventually investors will want to sue (which is the only comeuppance these types ever get) if he doesn't make good on his lies.

Keeping track of the lies proves that he did lie. Doesn't do any of us any good if investors believe him and he manages to make a deal with them to sweep the lies under the rug in exchange for something that's short term lucrative. But that's why.

The general masses just need drama as far as I can tell. Hate sells. Well, that and I think people like him want to keep people like us afraid so we're more controllable.

[–] sureshot0@discuss.online 5 points 1 week ago

Well we've got to keep a record, but we don't have to go along with it! When Altman says "ai is gonna be smarter than people" we can just say "no it won't buddy" and call it a day.
