Spanish were here earlier, but your point lagely stands.
The vikings were there for a bit as well, but only really went to Greenland and northern Canada before giving the whole thing up as a bad job. The weather up there is no joke, even compared to where they came from.

There were all levels of melaniated peoples here before colonization. Just none that couldn't tan. Those dark enough became the first slaves. Those light enough, covered up to keep the sun kisses at bay, and became "white". Everyone else was herded into the "Indian" label.
