He wanted a place where he could reap profits, stock options and no regard for AI safety. Welp should’ve seen this coming.

That’s the point of a non-profit. Which is what he signed up for. I understand that he like any other human being can have second thoughts or new outlooks, but this move was less about covering his ass, and more about crippling the new competition before you make the move.
