So it seems that a bunch of ex-openai core people will move to MS, and possibly work on the same stuff, depending on what MS has access to based on their openai investment deal. They're most likely to focus on bringing stuff to the enterprise market fast.

At the same time what's left of openai will put the breaks on stuff and possibly emphasise safety and slowing down. I think everyone will come out of this kerfuffle having "won" what they wanted. No idea how this will impact the overall field, but possibly some players will get a free catching-up opportunity. Maybe.

Please dear Tzeench, have someone leak gpt4 in general confusion, I MUST know if this is really 10 7b models in a trench coat :)

If the Emmet Shear is to be believed this whole thing has nothing to do with safety.

[–] Disastrous_Elk_6375@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Emmet Shear

I hadn't followed everything but a quick google away I found this, that I assume you're referring to:

PPS: Before I took the job, I checked on the reasoning behind the change. The board did not remove Sam over any specific disagreement on safety, their reasoning was completely different from that. I'm not crazy enough to take this job without board support for commercializing our awesome models.

Interesting. I think we'll know more as things settle.

They’ll be slowed down naturally without trying from everyone leaving to join Sam at Microsoft.

[–] Tartooth@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Not everyone will have "won"

End Users are going to get a even further lobotomized product and microsoft is now going to slingshot over openAI with a privatized version

depending on what MS has access to based on their openai investment deal

I think they have access to it all. Since even before all this drama, they pretty much did.

[–] Thistleknot@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

How would a non compete work in this agreement

[–] Commander_@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

From the article as well: Greg Brockman, OpenAI co-founder, is also joining Microsoft as part of a new advanced AI research team

[–] FPham@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Oh I wish we can get the scoop on the internal gossips... seems pretty juicy under the covers.

This was a serious coup, even if it doesn't look like it. It may also mean MS may get on wrong foot with OpenAi...

[–] MacaroonDancer@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Maybe MSFT will put Sam in charge of managing the Open AI relationship. Microsoft must have some say in how their $10B investment is used lol.

[–] fallingdowndizzyvr@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Microsoft must have some say in how their $10B investment is used lol.

In general, the way these work is in stages. It's not like an investor hands over the full wad of cash in one go. It's done in stages. Milestones are laid out and as each one is met they get the next installment of money. So investors have a lot of say about about it.

He wanted a place where he could reap profits, stock options and no regard for AI safety. Welp should’ve seen this coming.

[–] Scizmz@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

He wasn't actually getting paid. FYI.

[–] Sushrit_Lawliet@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

That’s the point of a non-profit. Which is what he signed up for. I understand that he like any other human being can have second thoughts or new outlooks, but this move was less about covering his ass, and more about crippling the new competition before you make the move.

Why are there so many Sam's dickridder on Reddit talking as if Sam is the main man behind OpenAI's recent success over Ilya, who was already an accomplished scientist when he was still in academia with Hinton?

If they fire Ilya over Sam and he move Google/Meta/X, I believe they would surpass OpenAI very quickly.

[–] Vontaxis@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

If it was up to Ilya there wouldn't be ChatGPT or GPT-4 for public use. So I don't see Google/Meta/X want to hire Ilya (on his terms)

Well with that attitude enjoy now Twitch 2.0!

[–] LightVelox@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Ilya is pro-safety and Sam is pro-immediatism and turning it into a product (atleast to people of Reddit), it pretty much boils down to that

[–] Czedros@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Redditors are mostly decently privileged people that rather see thing they can use rather than thing being developed safely

embrace! extend! terminate! << Microsoft

but jokes aside, this is crazy. Sam becomes the head of OpenAI again since Microsoft has a lot of say into OpenAI and it will do anything to support its customers and keep the AI integration going into its products with no obstacles.

but i dont know OAI doesnt seem to have a future. What a stupid blunder by the people who built it. Microsoft is going to get a butter smooth transition behind the scenes, they get all the talent, the gpt-4 (and 5 too) and will throw OAI into the dustbin once the transition is over. Right now Sam being part of MS gives assurance to all customers that Microsoft will keep the ship flowing without or without OAI. Once MS is on its own, Sam will also leave to do his own thing as he is.

[–] krste1point0@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

What talent? Mostly managers

[–] Slimxshadyx@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Microsoft has been working with OAI on integrating GPT into products, and there has probably been a lot of technical knowledge spread back and forth.

Now Microsoft has the leadership team from OAI, as well as whatever information OAI wasn’t sharing with Microsoft before, and they can probably start transitioning away from their reliance on OAI.

[–] krste1point0@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

So, according to you MS has all the technical knowledge needed, they were just just missing the key ingredient of Sam Altman.

Lets say i disagree with that notion.

[–] Aristocle-@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

[–] Herr_Drosselmeyer@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I was hoping for a shakeup and all we got was an expensive game of musical chairs? Meh.

[–] Public-Anybody8912@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I can’t imagine working at OpenAI, staring at an $80B valuation, and then having some self righteous prick torpedo the entire company.

[–] cirmic@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I hope I read this situation right that OpenAI is trying to avoid getting dragged further into the for-profit corporate machinery. In the light of all the ClosedAI memes, I'm so confused why the majority seems to cheer for Sam. He's the guy that turns startups into billion dollar companies.

[–] Scizmz@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Because the alternative is that you'll never see the models they develop. You'll hear about it in the news once something goes wrong if ever.

[–] cirmic@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I don't see how the for-profit goals align with being better for everyone. The publicly available models seem to be at least 6 months behind the latest developments, and how they're built is a complete secret. The public doesn't get to see anything and it's accelerating who knows where behind the scenes.

I see how what the board did was terrible, because it was seemingly just destructive with no way back. The board being wrong doesn't mean Sam is some kind of savior. I don't see how Sam's actions/direction are pro-humanity over just a game about controlling whatever is at the other end of this.

[–] cleverusernametry@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yeah it's sad. It's just revealed that most people are firmly stuck in the narrow minded venture capitalist induced mindset of startup success means highest validation possible. When literally the reason all this happened was to assert that that is not what openAI was meant to be

[–] Monkey_1505@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Here I am just hoping any of it becomes open source.

IDC about more wannabe corporate models.

ok so ilya tweeted this: " I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company. " i think its some positive news! and sama made hearts to it <33

This is how we get the ship computer. Now all we need is a ship.

[–] illathon@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (3 children)

So Sam doesn't give a damn about open source?

Considering the letter, Ilya's very quick apology that doesn't align with how he's being portrayed as an ego driven guy and how quickly Microsoft hired Sam and Greg, is it possible that Satya planned this whole thing from the beginning?

[–] fallingdowndizzyvr@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I doubt it. Since even before all this, people already considered OpenAI as part of Microsoft's orbit. That's why Microsoft stock took a hit on Friday when all this news hit.

What I want to know is, howTF does MSFT manage it's 49% multi-$B share of OAI, and a new AI division with CEO Sam Altman at the same time? Seems like a total train wreck.

[–] PSMF_Canuck@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

That was fast. Very fast. Kind of makes me wonder who was zooming who here…

[–] bitRAKE@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

... and that is how you gut a fish.
