im still debating wether i start a peertube channel or not, and im no pro but we all have to start somewhere. ive aksed variouse family member si know if i should do some sort of video content creation. i was thinking gaming but there are so many genres im not sure plus i have school and im worried it might make my life more stressful. does anybody here have experience with peertube, if so feel free to share something in the comments if possible. i also have somewhat of a low end pc that can manly run old titles and 2d games.

how do you even find motivation to keep posting video after video?

so is starting a peertube worth it or is now a good time to start?

Real talk, start a peertube channel but only if you're doing it alongside other platforms.

The top channels on peertube get maybe 70 views per video and they've got big organizations behind them quite often.

If you going to do it, do it because it's something you want to do, not because you expect views, or fans, or anything like that. If you happen to stumble upon success, great. But that's not something you should expect because more likely than not it'll just be yet another games channel.

I have been running my own PT instance for about 3 years now. I only post videos of things that interest me, plus a videocast of a The Linux Lugcast podcast we do. I don't post video after video like that. It's very sporadic. PT is not YouTube, you will not find that level of engagement. If you are looking for lots of eyes on your content, PT is not the route to take. If you are interested in federation and want to move away from centralized platforms, it is good for that.

You didn't mention if you were joining an existing instance or hosting your own. That will determine whether your current PC is adequate or not.

oh i forgot to mention that i was thinking of finding a gaming instance or a genral instance to join becasue i lack the hardware to host an instance and idk how that hosting works.

also thank you for sharing.

I'd say go for it. Even if you don't make a lot of content right away, you can still get a feel for how Peertube works, how to set up your channels, add thumbnails, how to automate closed captioning, etc.

Plus the hardest part will be choosing an instance, looking at the videos posted and seeing if you want your videos on that instance (extreme politics, NSFW stuff, etc). Plus see what their instance rules are; anyplace that says everyone is welcome here is eventually going to become a gathering spot for a--holes that got banned somewhere else.

I started my channel about a month ago during the Reddit migration. So far I've fallen behind on putting out videos, but it's still a fun hobby.
