Although Eminem was offered the lead role in the 2013 science-fiction film Elysium, he turned it down because director Neill Blomkamp would not change its location from Los Angeles to Detroit.

I like the love Eminem has for Detroit.

It seems like a strange point to fix on. I don't recall LA as a setting being all that relevant to the story. Maybe the fact that LA is currently more prosperous was important so that it would contrast more harshly with the run down city in the film?
