JLC Polaris….
Oris. I have not found any "normal" people who have heard of them. In fact, my neighbor thought my Kermit was made by that "fly fishing company" 😅
I've only ever had 1 person notice my Oris... and he was wearing Zenith.
Luxury?
A. Lange& Sonne
I'd say something that looks old and from an unknown brand
Zenith, Laco, Steinhart, JLC, Piaget, VC.
Tudor?
In my experience nearly anyone in 2023 wearing a non smart watch is into watches
Basically any watch between $1-10k that isn’t a Tag or Rolex
I once ran into someone wearing the exact same Parmigiani, that was odd. Also have a 500 piece LE JLC and was once with a group and we noticed TWO of the other guys in the group also had the same watch.
Breguet, Grand seiko (they have a cult), vintage watches like omegas and Heuer.
Any non fashion watch.
Notarolex.
Expensive Seikos, not even Grand Seikos, just the super hard to find stuff that runs at a premium now. If I saw somebody with a JDM lacquer dial urushi SPB or SARX model I would know they have discerning taste. Lots of people like Grand Seikos, watch people want the limited run hand painted Japanese market only stuff.

Sinn
The more expensive it gets while not being Rolex
From where I'm from, pretty much anything besides a smartwatch or a fashion watch (Hugo, Armani, Fóssil, etc)
IWC or JLC catch my attention every time.
Forty+ years collecting and trading…I kept what I felt were special pieces only and include brands like Tudor, GO, Sinn, Tissot, Omega…not the average models either but special pieces. I’ve owned and loved many special pieces and many I wish I wouldn’t have let go including Enicar (Racine spelled backward), some early Rolex, Wakmann just to name a few. I think I’ve owned almost every iteration of the Speedmaster and Submariner. A lot of my trading was to be able to own, measure and then flip special watches. What’s left will go up for sale when I retire - there is enough there to fund a few years at the beach (but probably sleeping in a tent).
