Title says it all. I’m seriously considering getting a 556 with the black mother of pearl dial as my normal wear watch (even I concede it will never be my ONLY watch, but maybe my USUAL watch).

From what I can see, it seems like a gada watch. You could dress it up for suit service, but you could equally take it swimming at the beach. It’s well built and gorgeous and not too expensive. Or so I think.

Tell me it’s not fancy enough to dress up with a suit. Tell me it’s poorly built or has QC issues. Tell me the dial is ugly. PLEASE, help me avoid this. I guess you could say get the regular black 556 instead but that doesn’t help much.

didn't expect a Patton reference in this sub lol

[–] Chai_latte_95831@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Technically the no-date is a plus since it looks so much better without it

[–] Si3rra6ix@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Only a pimp

Don’t threaten me with a good time

Worse, it supposedly has a ghost date position on the crown. I know it's dumb, but that would bother me on a $1500 watch.

[–] Dark1000@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Really? I get it for a $150 AliExpress watch, but that's unacceptable for the price. It's not that dumb, you could accidentally damage the movement if you aren't careful.

[–] LoaferDan@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yea I use the word supposedly because it’s just based on what I’ve read about them, I haven’t had a chance to check myself. If true, however, yes I agree definitely too expensive for that.

[–] WDSCS@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It's too expensive to have rumors like that.

[–] forbiddenpineapple@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I know about ghost date positions, but I’ve never heard the damage angle. What’s up with that?

[–] Dark1000@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'm not 100% sure if it would apply, depending on if any adjustments were made to the movement.

But you typically shouldn't change the date when the time is between 9:00pm and 3:00am. If there is a ghost position and you aren't aware of it, you could accidentally move to that position and start changing the date in the movement without realising it.

It's not super likely, but if you set the time 100 times, it could easily happen once or twice.

I own one, sadly it really has a ghost date and overall the crown is not the best, especially getting it to pop out when you unscrew it.

[–] LoaferDan@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Damn. Well I guess you can’t have everything sometimes. Sucks about the crown too. I have a Hydroconquest and the crown is a bit similar to how you described. Definitely can be annoying, although I probably paid half of what the 556 goes for so it usually doesn’t bother me too much.

[–] Prisma_Cosmos@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They changed movements, and new ones do not have a ghost date.

A GADA needs a date complication. It also needs a distinguishing feature, for example a second hand with some personality

I wish you the best of luck in finding it

[–] Prisma_Cosmos@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No, a GADA watch needs a mother of pearl dial and nothing else.

[–] 2_Spo0ky@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Go for it. It's a beautiful watch and Sinn offers amazing quality for the price. It offers a solid movement that's very well regulated and utilitarian finishing that's executed about as well as it gets.

You're gonna have to buy it once it gets into your head, I'm sorry. It was the same when I bought my 104 MG.

[–] Chai_latte_95831@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly I have nothing bad to say about this watch.

The colour of the pearl doesn't look feminine; it is very well built; it doesn't have a date which looks so much better than the regular 556; the movement is well finished, the size is perfect at 39mm and the price is unbeatable.

[–] lodermoder@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Other than the dial material this is one of the must ugly, overrated, and boring watches I've ever seen

[–] taizzle71@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I would definitely go for the 556a rs or 556i rs instead. The mop is too bling a daily. Deep matte black is more like it. Add a little pop of red and it's done.

[–] OdonataDarner@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Check resale value.

[–] Cylindt@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It has a ghost position, don't do it!

[–] b3mus3d@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

8 months ago I was agonising between this and a nomos as my first expensive watch.

Knowing this, I’m glad I went nomos.

[–] Smalltownher0@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Do it. I've been holding myself back for months now but it's an inevitable purchase one day

[–] pio_11@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

dont this watch is ugly as sinn

[–] Necessary-Leg7246@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Buy it! I dare you ;)

[–] BreakDismal@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Look at that strap too 😍

You know you need to.

[–] Horotecture@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You need it.

[–] matchooooh@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The proportions of the hour hand were enough to turn me off. Too stubby for my taste.

[–] fwzy_34@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You want a unique dial?

Check the Citizen NB1060-12L

[–] likethevegetable@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Have never seen one IRL, but aesthetically it just fits the bill for a one watch. Get it with the bracelet.

No leather band watch is a one watch solution imho

[–] MrKorakis@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Looks like an oil slick

[–] musicalife31@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

DON’T! You need to get off Reddit bc the Sinn circlejerking here is ridiculous. Bland, brute, and straight ugly watches. Even their logo is shit. Someone just hit Ctrl + I and typed “Sinn” on the computer.

Anyone who comes to Reddit for affirmation on buying a Sinn should just buy a G Shock. You’ll get the same amount of kudos on here while saving $800.

[–] _Administrator_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Also, the value of the watch will never grow or be stable.

[–] sfeicht@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Pearl isn't as versatile as you think it it.

[–] notrickross7@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Do it..when you can. Don’t overpay.

[–] MonkeySherm@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’m not sure the mother of Pearl dial would be my first choice, I’d have to see it in person - but I absolutely get it. For a daily wear if this is your style, you probably can’t do better without spending at least 2-3x if not significantly more.

Fucking send it man that thing is dope.

[–] NewSinner_2021@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Beautiful piece

[–] xetmes@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Typical Reddit chuffer watch.

Helmut Sinn, the founder of the company, was a Nazi during WW2. If you wear Sinn watches, you are a Nazi sympathizer.

[–] GoldfishDude@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They spell "automatic" incorrectly

[–] Queasy-Bad600@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It’s got an ETA movement and that’s good enough not to buy it.

Honestly though it’s gorgeous wish we got them in SA

[–] Prisma_Cosmos@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Why?

Also its an SW-200

[–] wtfOP@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

“This? Oh this is a SINN it’s a German brand. IYKYK. It’s my GADA watch. it’s the mother of pearl dial so they have applied indices. It’s got a ghost date but I don’t mind… hey where you going?”

[–] PDX-ROB@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Get the Longines Spirit Titanium 40mm instead.

[–] Berkel@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Mother of pearl is cheap
