It’s in the bedroom and times of the year are so bright.

Does anyone know of a smart blind of any style that would work up there? [z-wave, Zigbee, WiFi, esphome, anything that’ll talk to home assistant]

We have smartwing blinds using zwave on other windows but they don’t make any for the angles

I'm sorry this is not advice, but what an abomination of a window that is.

instead maybe just tint with window with UV / heat resistant ceramic film

[–] tsfy2@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I just want to know who did the mudding and taping. They need to be fired.

You could order film for the window to protect the heat coming in the house and reduce the brightness as well too. It’s similar to tint on your car.

maybe ikea blinds like these

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/praktlysing-cellular-blind-smart-wireless-battery-operated-white-00514274/

it's somewhat "adjustable" and can tilt when one corner hits the bottom first.... largest is 48" though.

Or just mount it on the outside of the window/ceiling

Came here to suggest this

Window stickers are cute and fun!

Not sure on Z-Wave but you can get Lutron for angled windows. $$$$ though.

I'd go a different route and put window film there, maybe tinted or frosted glass

[–] Georgep0rwell@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Stained glass stick ons?

A motorized shade is possible but very expensive and you would have to run wire because they take 35V and do not come as battery operated. They are also tension so the casette would be at the bottom and you would have cables running up to the top of the window.

Another solution would be fixed shades by Insolroll - but you wouldn't be able to open and close it; would be fixed.

Personally i would go for the fixed shade option over tinting.

Tint that bitch and be done

[–] JohannB42@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I would tint it with 5% window film, or depending on the outside colour off the house, either silver or bronze reflective film

[–] qwertyvonkb@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Assuming that is not the only window, you can tint it?

[–] BPRob-Chandler@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Not much of a view, so I would put up some stained glass, there are many who make custom shape. You can have a custom theme.

Perhaps something with smart window foils that can turn dark under a small charge?

[–] ozegg@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I think you'll find it's clear when under charge and opaque while off. https://www.wedoblinds.com.au/products/smartfilm/

You are absolutely right, and I shouldn’t be typing before having my coffee

No experience with this company, but here’s one of several that make motorized window coverings for trapezoidal windows.

[–] eclecticzebra@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

They are fantastic. But like others are saying, be prepared to spend $5k+ plus labor to install.

[–] InevitableStruggle@alien.top 0 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Shutters? They can be custom made in a variety of impossible configurations. I’ve got Norman wood shutters, but I suspect others can do the same.

[–] Pineapple_Spenstar@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

No point going with someone else. Norman has like 70% of the market share, and for good reason. Although I only recommend going with wood shutters if you want them stained, or there are weight issues. For standard white shutters, MDF is perfectly fine and will last decades

Smart blinds? I'd be frustrated enough trying to find regular blinds that would work in that spot.

Your home designer/builder was a doofus.

[–] HeyaShinyObject@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

doofus

Yeah, they should have changed the roof line so the window could be rectangular

[–] Deadlift_007@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Right. The only way to add a window in that space was to add a strange angled one right at the ceiling line. My mistake.

They were probably thinking most people like natural light and threw a window in there. More light in the bedroom during the day isn't an issue for just people

[–] nidnul@alien.top 0 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You just need the electro-dimming windows on a Dreamliner… maybe that’s actually possible?

[–] hoserb2k@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Electro dimming (electrochromatics) is not rocket science, but it’s not something you can buy off the shelf either. Even if it was available , it would be a total window replacement.

For triangular and oddly shaped windows, OP should look at Venetian blinds because they can be cut to any shape without affecting their operation. there are also prebuilt home automation products that can turn the operating screw of Venetian blinds.

[–] kyouteki@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You can apply electrochromic films to existing windows.

[–] hoserb2k@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

This may actually be a great application for a film retrofit. I’ve ordered a few samples from aliexpress, and the two issues I had were: 1) optical clarity is good not great, and 2) not dark enough for my needs at maximum opacity. for an indirect window like this, that may not need to be very opaque.
