Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.

It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.

Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

Warning: Working with electricity can result in injury, property damage, or even death if it is not done properly. Please keep this in mind while assisting others. If you are not sure about what you are doing, hire a licensed professional.

I currently have no home automation in my home, but I do have a number of apple devices.

I am going to be gone for a few months, and would like the ability to turn on a 2 amp 120v device once per week for about 30 minutes. It would be fine if it turned on/off at the same time every week. It is not required that I have the ability to turn it on/off remotely … but I do have internet available.

What hardware would accomplish this small project easily?

7 Day Plugin Timer - $15 - $30

I am curious what device needs to run for 30 minutes only once per week.

I just want to trickle some water to some plants once per week. All I need is an outlet that can control the source power. It is a request from my wife so they do not perish while away.

This is something you could accomplish with a very inexpensive 24-hour timer. While available year around, with the holidays coming, they are usually on sale.
