Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.

It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.

Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

Hi Everyone- I am looking to see if anyone has ideas for a few automations for our dog. He's a very BIG American Bulldog and he is also verry slobbery. I am always chasing him around the house with a towel to wipe him after he's done drinking and eating. I just bought a Braava M6 and created an automation for it to clean the area that he eats in so that the slobber is cleaned on the floor.

HOWEVER, he still walks around the house with food all over his face and dripping water. I would love to make an automation to where I can get notified when he's done eating so I can catch him before he makes it too far to wipe his face. Any ideas? I was thinking a motion detector but not sure if it will set off when anyone is in the general area and be useless. Also I would need to know right when he's done, not after he's walked away.

Also, he is always eating the cat's food. I was thinking of putting a motion sensor by her food but it would go off if she's there too, and if anyone is in the general area in our kitchen I'm thinking. Any ideas there too?

Lastly, he tends to jump on our bed/chair in our bedroom when we are gone. We have a camera that tracks motion but unless we are keeping a close eye on the camera it's hard to tell when we are getting a notification that he's moving, or if he's jumping on the chair. We have one of those spike mats AND a mat that makes a noise. NEITHER deter him! Would a motion sensor work that I only activate when I'm gone? Anyone try anything like that?

Thanks!!

IMHO there’s no way any automation is going to help or solve your issue. He’s a dog. He does dog things. You’ll just have to watch him. Maybe the only thing you can do is get 1 of those training collars that shocks him lightly when he’s doing bad things like eating cat food. He’ll learn to stay away from that area (maybe who knows)

thats true! we actually do have one of those collars...and i would just need to maybe place a motion sensor near the food so that i know when he's going over there. Although hard to tell if it's just the cat.

I saw a woman on TikTok who trained her bulldog (I think) to rest its chin on a towel for a few moments after drinking water. This may be more work up front, but the training would be mentally stimulating for your dog and increasing training time could help with solving other issues like the cat food thing.

Have you looked at the bowls that stop them from putting their whole face in the water? I've just order one for my American Bulldog as he drinks by trying to stick his whole head into the water.

I got one of those it worked fairly well but it was too much of a pain to take apart and refill daily, and it would smell really fast if we didn't. Hope it works better for you though!

In my opinion, deterring him from jumping on furniture is not something you want to do, especially if you are trying to form a bond with the dog. Nonetheless, you might be able to create an automation where motion sensor sends you a notification but only when everyone is not home.
