Great watch choice. I’m not totally up on Seiko 5 prices, but that sounds reasonable.

[–] Raian_L@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Fantastic looking watch for a great price with a good movement from a reputable brand. Overall one of the best first watches you could get. Absolutely fantastic job buddy

[–] believe_these_blues@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Seiko 5 is an excellent place to start. It would be my recommendation to anyone who was interested in getting a first watch to explore the hobby. I used to have one almost just like what you got.

[–] MilesBeforeSmiles@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Great watch. Really solid choice for your first automatic.

[–] mrwagon1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Where did you get it for $180? I’ve been looking for a sale on this watch

[–] Dangerous-Noise-4692@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Great watch. Also check out the Orient Bambino for a nice, inexpensive dress watch. They make them in a variety of sizes as well.

[–] 747_Airbus@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is great watch, mate!

[–] TheCarDemotic2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My first automatic was a Seiko 5 and now I have 3. Love them

[–] Quantum_Tangled@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It's classy... nice first choice!

Seiko 5s are “starter” watches for many on this sub. This is a sharp-looking example and the movement is good.

Can’t speak to price, haven’t shopped them lately. Sub $200 these days is probably a deal, but I just don’t know for sure.

[–] Disastrous-Issue7212@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

“Starter”, “gateway drug”. Tomayto, tomahto. Lol

[–] Dcajunpimp@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Great choice. My first Seiko 5 with the old 7s26 movement was a daily beater and lasted 15 years.

Now I have an SRPH23 black dial 40mm version of your that’s barely left my wrist in over a year. And it’s perfect.

Great watch at a great size, but I don’t think I’ll be replacing my SNK807 with this very similar watch costing twice as much. As the discontinued SNK800 series becomes increasingly unavailable, I see this as excellent alternative.

I was initially going to buy something used or older but was worried about Mumbai specials and my own lack of knowledge. Being Canadian, almost every pre-owned site I found was shipping internationally.

Probably would not have grabbed this one if not for the discount since YT reviewers say the $300usd MSRP for the new is overpriced.

Fine watch from a reputable watchmaker. You can’t go wrong.

Fantastic. Wear it in health. Looks like an excellent value.

[–] nobody_smith723@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

it's a good watch for a decent entry lvl price. and Seiko is a solid brand.

would say... if you want to branch out, try some different strap options. different colors or styles of straps. the watch should be fairly flexible in terms of colors/styles that will work with it.

and... if you dig wearing a watch, yeah. there's tons of info, ton of different watches. types. brands, styles. and can be a great hobby

[–] Forward_Fox_833@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yes gonna check out some different straps and bands for sure. I hear lots of people like the Nato straps? Picked this one because I figured I could wear it stock and it wouldn't look off while in suit for work with the leather strap. Was worried about fit and being pinched by metal straps lol...

[–] messijordanmachine22@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’ll last you many many years , enjoy

[–] Happy_Boy_29@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The only thing that matters is that you smile when you look it and that makes you feel good, very few other people will pay much if any attention to it. For the money that is a solid choice with some je ne sais quoi simple elegance, I hope you enjoy wearing it in good health for many decades to come.

[–] CdeFmrlyCasual@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah it’s good. Look up how to treat a mechanical watch tho. They require a little more consciousness and care than an electronic watch

[–] Pizza_Low@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

One important thing to remember is in this sub there are a lot of people who have the income to buy and show off watches that the rest of us can't. And there are a lot of people here who have the ability to pretend they own watches they don't.

Buy a watch you enjoy wearing and is cool to you. Don't worry about the rest. Those in this sub that call a watch a "starter watch" are often flexing over others that they know more or can afford more.

[–] DatGuyGandhi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My friend, is okay, no?

[–] beanbag_123@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Woah! I have that exact same watch except it's on a Milanese bracelet, runs a bit fast for me but that could be because of the weather I'm in, otherwise it's a fantastic watch that I wear everyday :))

[–] FrenchBangerer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They are great watches. I love the Seiko 5 series. My first mechanical watch back in the 90s was a Seiko 5 military style watch and I loved it. I'd still have it but I lent it to my daughter one day when she was a kid and she lost it. I think it cost me £59 back then. I found a replacement on the watch sales forum here. Similar vintage as my first and runs well and keeps good time.

You chose well.

[–] Time-Ad8127@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My first watch was a Seiko 5 now my entire collection is like Seiko 5s 😂

[–] oxpoleon@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Seiko 5s are one of the most respected budget mechanical watches. Yeah, you did okay by a long shot.

I'm surprised by how much the price has risen in recent years but at one point the Seiko 5 prices were impossibly and unsustainably low.

[–] muddassirch@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You can never go wrong with Seiko. Best value for money and they run like forever.

[–] likethevegetable@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Looks good. Might be able to find cheaper. Mechanical day/dates are annoying though unless you're gonna keep it wound.

[–] justimeout@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Oh man, this is more than ok. But prepared to spend countless hours on the internet looking at watches now. This is the ultimate gateway drug.

[–] ProRustler@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

A Seiko 5 was my gateway drug into this money pit of a hobby. One of us... One of us...

I got one a S5....I feel under but nearly 20 years ago. Wear it often still. Nice, but you don't stress about the daily wear n tear.
