So many beautiful standing stones in Scotland. There are some a few minutes from my house, just past an old castle next to a loch and hills. It’s quite fairytale when I think about it.
I love that the UK as a whole has managed to hold on to so many stone circles. There's something magical and mysterious about them, thinking about the thousands of years they've been there.
Unfortunately with more extreme weather those with carvings are starting to wear away. The more beloved or prominently known ones are being encapsulated in boxes to preserve them but most will just wear away.
The boxes aren't pretty either.
For example, The Maiden Stone normally, and boxed.
An example of the wear on the western face.
Can you not see the stone at all like that?
Nope. A rare few have perspex boxes that you can see through but most are just a wooden box. It's removed in summer to allow people to see them.
Ahh, so not 365 days. Good.
