I know this is strange, but I prefer loud watches that I can occasionally hear audibly in quiet environments. I find that it’s kind of calming or grounding for me for some reason. One of my cheapest watches (Orient Bambino V2) has gotten tons of wrist time for me, just because I like how it sounds.

What are your loudest tickers?

Timex expedition scout it’s so loud it’s not allowed in the bedroom at night but when I’m actually wearing it day to day it’s a non issue

[–] JupiterCrash92@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

When I first got my expedition I went nuts the first night trying to figure out where that sound was coming from in my room haha

[–] Illustrious_Army_871@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

“It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.” They knew what they were doing

[–] tubbyx7@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I read this often but I cannot hear my scout at all. Quite room, ear to the watch, nothing. Maybe mum was right and the music was too loud when I was young.

[–] BeepBangBraaap@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Timex Expedition North

I think the rotor is actually louder than the ticking, though

[–] lazybeef@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Anything with a 6497/8 movement in it

[–] screamsos@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

For quartz timex and for mechanical, usually anything vintage

[–] silenced_no_more@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My Timex easy reader and Timex expedition

[–] VodkaDealer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My vintage Kirova Type 1 ticks so loud I can hear it from across a room!

[–] fishfarm20@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Either of my hand wounds. In particular, the Speedy.

[–] FlatulantFlame@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Timex expedition I can't hear it all the time but when I do It drives me a little nuts.

[–] stevemandudeguy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Rateka Sputnik

[–] CapableBoysenberry23@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Rolex oysterquartz, can be heard accross a silent room easily.

[–] arazamatazguy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If I wind my Hublot near my cats one goes nuts and runs out of the room.

[–] harlokin@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My Nomos Ludwig 41 has a satisfyingly loud tick, presumably due to case thinness.

[–] happy_crackhead@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My first watch - the Timex Expedition Scout. I gotta put that thing in a drawer of under some clothes because damn can that thing tick

[–] F1RE_FLY@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

70s walthams are super loud my dexter waltham from 1976 tiks the loudest.

[–] LaikaToplake@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Rolex Oysterquartz. Cant be on the night table. Back in the box before bedtime :)

[–] Gr00mpa@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My Timex Expedition Scout. It's a cool, no-nonsense watch that I wear reasonably often, but it's damn loud. I don't mind the noise that much, though.

[–] sixfiend@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

A lot of Timex here but i found handwound Panerais to be loud too

[–] PineFreshGuy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I had a plastic Swatch a number of years ago that was ridiculously loud

[–] HYPERNOVA3_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

A watch I built from aliexpress parts, including an ETA 6497 seagull clone. That thing is loud, really loud.

[–] far_beyond_driven_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have an older Hamilton Khaki manual, and it's incredibly loud.

[–] greysky7@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Being able to hear the ticking when I'm trying to sleep is my own personal hell. There is some kind of kafkaesque torture in being forced to be aware of the precise passage of time while trying to fall asleep.

Anyway, that's my Timex flyback chronograph which I love but cannot keep anywhere nearby at night.

Im actually glad to hear that other people find that calming.

[–] Platophaedrus@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have a Stowa Flieger in 40mm that I can hear if I am in a quiet office or I bring the watch within about 20cm of my head.

[–] ChangingMonkfish@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My girlfriend got annoyed about my Tissot Le Locle ticking on the bedside table at night (the 2824-2 version, not Powermatic).

Swatch Sistem51 also pretty loud.

[–] stefanorinaldi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My grandpa's Normex watch

[–] Plus-Day-3700@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Huh, I have quite a lot of quartz watches but mine would be a mechanical Vostok weirdly

[–] danigarvire@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My vintage zodiac sea wolf has a hell of a loud tick

[–] OES25@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I've owned Timex watches that ticked insanely loudly. My automatics are off course decently audible when put up against the ear (most of which have been Seiko 4R movements), and so is the Swiss Precidrive/HAQ (High Accuracy Quartz) movement in my Certina. The by far most quiet watches I've owned though, are Citizen Eco-Drives. More or less completely in-audible, even when held up against the ear. This is probably to save energy, and the movement is running more efficiently and more refined. I have an impression Citizen just knows what they're doing with quartz. I've also found them to be more reliable than Swiss quartz, as I have just had that Precidrive movement start running way out of spec, failing me for the 2nd time already in 4 years now. While my Eco-Drives have been rock solid even with harsh use.

3861 Speedmaster Moonwatch

[–] Awkward-Sale4235@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

my tara sport, and a couple of vintage swatches.

[–] HamHandedHorologist@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have a Soviet-era Luch dresswatch loud enough to remind everyone in the committee meeting not to waste the party's time.

[–] Administrative_Ant64@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Swatch are so loud I can’t have them in the same room when sleeping.

[–] Smiths_fan137@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My Swatch. And yet it still ticks much less than a Timex. I was going to order a Timex and cancelled due to this. Least noisy is a Tissot. It's quartz but you literally can't hear anything but silence

[–] Nice-Load-1869@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If you own a Timex the answer can only be Timex.

[–] NxPat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Anything from Swatch, yes, including the moons.

[–] mokomoko31@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Timex Expedition. 13 y/o and still working.

[–] Autiflips@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Roskopf pocket watches. When running well they’re just incredibly loud

[–] NudelXIII@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Not ticking but humming: STOWA Verus 40

In case of ticking all kinda sound the same.

[–] el__duder1n0@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Any soviet mechanical wristwatch will sound like there's two tiny elves inside having a twig breaking competition all night long. 👍

[–] toondoggie@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My loudest watch is my '64 Chateau Diver (mechanical movement). If one of my ears is turned the right way at night, I feel like I'm watching 60 Minutes. The loudest watch in our house though, predictably, is my wife's Timex Weekender. Thankfully, my Timex Expedition Field Chronograph is completely silent. I have a lot of mechanical clocks though so the watches aren't really that loud.

[–] PlantSkyRun@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Timex Weekender. I can hear it ticking in the middle of night.

[–] TantiveIVfromATL@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don't own it anymore, it was stolen during a break-in over ten years ago, but my Rolex Oysterquartz.

You could hear the audible tick from across the room. I would still own it if it hadn't been stolen.

[–] Drangar@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] metsurf@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have a couple of handwinders based on Molnja movements that can be heard from a few feet away in a very quiet room.

[–] Mastercheef69@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Swatch X Shenron, I can't have it in the same room as me when I'm sleeping.
