Title kind of explains it. My HD6XX sound incredible but the sound goes all over when I really turn it up. What does the community recommend for this situation? I'm driving them with a modi/magni stack if that helps. Thanks y'all.

That's an inescapable limitation of open-back headphones, so you need closed-backs or IEMs (or keep the volume low). IEMs are likely going to be the better sound quality bang-for-your-buck at this price range if you're OK with the form factor.

Can’t hear the wife? Sounds like an unintended benefit! Bonus!

So I should buy...

A new personal room at best, a closed-back headphone at worst

[–] savvaspc@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Where't the "a new wife" on this scale?

[–] jcned@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Listening to HD6XX isn’t worth getting a new wife over.

[–] Silverjerk@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Agreed; you'd need to upgrade to an Abyss Dianna or DCA Expanse before considering jumping back on Tinder.

[–] lucky_little_lion@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

depends on the wife

[–] cleversocialhuman@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Something that will permanently disable hear hearing. Or closed headphones, whatever is more convenient.

[–] szakee@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

and she can't tolerate some background music?

[–] Jealous-Asparagus908@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why did you assume it was “music” ? 😏

This is the answer if you have/want to be in the same room while using them. For the money, you’ll get better sound from IEMs over closed backs.

[–] tomatillo_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'd recommend iems (closedbacks at this price point are hopeless) for when you have to be considerate - they're not gonna be quite the same, but its your best option - then use the hd6xxs when you dont have to be :D

Although i'd say maybe listen softer - hd6xx shouldnt leak enough sound to be a big problem at sane listening volumes

[–] astro143@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I was going to say, at my listening level, my 6XXs are inaudible from over a foot away.

maybe in a quiet room, but the sound of HVAC running is louder.

[–] AllegedlyLuke@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What did he say about sane listening volumes?? Anybody? I couldn't hear hi... haha <3

[–] Deceneu808@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Like others said. Separate room or grab the upcoming ZMF Bokeh closed back. Price should be around 1k if you are willing. Ignore all other closed backs below it. Maybe give a try on the AKG K371 but I'd rather listen in the bathroom than give up on the HD6xx

If you're in Australia Addicted to Audio have a special on Focal.

I got the Radiance and also have come from the 650's (still have them) and totally love them.

They are darker sounding but totally not lacking in detail.

[–] therealjoemontana@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Moondrop blessing 2

[–] VII777@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

my lsa-hp2 are fucking gangster for closed backs. other than that I'd choose good iems probably.

[–] MakeshiftApe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Grab a decent closed back or an IEM that you can afford, and then use autoEQ to EQ it to the overall tuning of the HD6XX. It won't be a 6XX replacement, but I do this exact thing when I want to listen to my K702 but want the isolation of a closed back - I use autoEQ to EQ my CAL! or HD25 -> the tuning of the K702, and listen with one of those. It's obviously not quite the same experience but it's close enough to be great for those times when open back just isn't possible.

[–] purana_sadhu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Please pardon my ignorance, but what headphone is CAL!?

[–] SnooComics2532@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Bro just ask her if she’s ok with background noise, maybe she’s cool with it. You might be trying to solve a problem that doesnt exist yet

Other solution will be have an iem/closed back hp when she’s there, then just use it when she’s not in the same room as you

[–] TortieMVH@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Your listening volume is too high.

[–] lovemocsand@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Bullshit, with open backs there is bleed at any volume

[–] aqwn@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not enough to be heard 6 ft away if you’re listening at a reasonable volume.

[–] Theliminal@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Nah, that's simply not true if you're in a quiet room together you will hear them at any volume, outside yeah maybe I'd agree with you but indoors my missus complains about this all the time, I don't drive mine particularly hard either.

[–] William_Sidis@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I would strongly recommend DCA AEON 2 Noire, a harman tuned closed back.

I have the Noire and HD600 and I enjoy both of them equally.

For IEMs, I would recommend the Dunu SA6 MKII. They have a mild V-Shpe sound signature but their timbre is reminiscent of HD6XX.

[–] KBDFan42@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’d just recommend you get IEMs. You can’t quite get a “real” soundstage with them, but for the price, good IEMs are going to beat closed-backs. Truthear Hexas are some great beginner IEMs

[–] ProphetNimd@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Is she unhappy with just any amount of noise coming from them or are you seriously blasting your music? I can only hear noise bleed from my 600s if someone is listening to them like right next to me. If the latter I'd lower your volume before you damage your hearing.

Like all the other answers here, I'll say get a closed back headphone or IEMs. IEMs probably sound a bit clearer to me but closed backs are more comfortable (for me) and have better soundstage, if you care about that.

[–] Krona_castle@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

...earplugs for the misses.

Easy

[–] purserd@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Aeon closed X - more expensive but definitely an upgrade and won’t leak near as much

[–] dnskent@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As everyone here loves the HG6xx could anyone give me an honest opinion if i should bother to upgrade from my sennheiser HD580 precisions, i do love them but have the same issue with the wife moaning lol. Ive just ordered a little dot mk2 to go with them as well as the Topping A50s im using currently. Cheers

[–] IMKGI@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You should buy nothing, your wife is the one having a problem, she should come up with a solution for herself, headphones for herself would be one, going to a different room while you listen would be another one, plenty of solutions out there, but "i don't like you listening to music while i am next to you so you need to buy new stuff" is just toxic behavior, if she doesn't like it she can leave

[–] WarHead75@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Get her some Moondrop Chus

[–] CitizenDldo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Easy choice, I was faced with a similar issue. 7Hz Timeless iems are incredible. I recommend them constantly. Probably ordering a second pair (since I’ve had mine since release), just to ensure I have backups.

[–] So_Say_We_Yall@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Not sure if anyone has mentioned, but the Audeze Maxwell does go pretty hard imo.

[–] Kaizenism@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Maybe the Neumann NDH-20’s? Similar ballpark but still amazing as closed backs
