I was able to just install F-droid and from there get Obtainium to import my usual apps, including Librera which I prefer over KoReader. No jailbreak necessary.
However... I do eventually wanna jailbreak it and get Amazon's presence off there entirely if I can. Thanks for the references, for when I get there.
Just letting the more non-techy people know that you can get FOSS apps like KoReader without having to go all the way, so to speak.
Have you instructions?
I'm guessing Kindle Fire, an Android tablet.
I'd love to put Android apps on my Paperwhite tho.
Oh, yeah, it is a Kindle Fire. I never got into e-ink.
So glad I managed to jailbreak mine just before they did this
Did what?
Of you can just put your device in airplane mode .. lmao y'all like drowning in glasses of water.
I decided to give it a shot not too long ago. Its a bit of give and take. Pros and cons.
With KOreader you get more options for customizing layouts and fonts and spacing. You can also just put books in different folders which is great for organizing. Like I have a folder for my horror, fantasy, gen lit, classics. While I made sure to organjze my stuff on Caliber, theres not as many options on Kindle out the box, so I cant just look through books based on that, which is a feature I always wished they would have added. It also read more formats. Epub is seen as the universal one for books, but it also does PDF, DjVu, FB2, PDB, TXT, ZIP, CBT, CBZ, FB2, RTF, HTML, CHM, and DOC.
But also, yeah. My Kindle is usually on airplane mode anyways because wifi drains the battery, and I just pulled things over with the computer anyways. The UI while scrolling through books also looks so much nicer IMO. And as long as youre not doing hundreds of books at a time, its not that hard to set up collections. And while the Kindle doesnt have quite as many in depth options for fonts and shit, the specific file format for the specific UI for the specific devices also meant I never had issues with getting it to look nice.
So over all, if you like tinkering with stuff, its cool. But I do agree that it's not really needed. You can still download books from other sources and then just transfer them over.
What did I miss?
Yeah, I am wondering the same, I don't have a Kindle, my gf has one though, and it is perpetually in airplane mode... Because why would we need the wifi on for this thing all the time?
Amazon disabled the the possibility to download the books you bougth onto your pc and sometimes they change or delete books wich will change the books on your kindle. In the yt video linked the person says the changed for example the cover of books to advertise a new show based on the book.
And jailbraking helps getting the books off the device?
No but makes it easier to sideload and prevents amazon from owning/changing/deleting "your" books
You can still sideload afaik. You send the epub to the Kindle email. That still works.
Yes you can, i just said i makes it easier. And you can till amazon decides you can't... Or maby they will check the email account of you kindle and close your account because of "possibly pirated books" or whatever, they decide not you... Thats my whole point
My kindle hasn't been online since 2012. Just buy DRM free books or pirate them, and then transfer via cable. None of the firmware upgrades introduced anything useful.
