JD Vance attempted a charm offensive on Tuesday, and failed with the charm while succeeding in being offensive.

It happened during an announcement that former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, would be leading a task force for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico next year.

Rather than stoke excitement for a global event that could be a tourism cash cow for North America, Vance decided to take a different approach — and joked about deporting the potential thousands of tourists visiting the U.S. for the occasion.

Fortunately, if this shit keeps up, there are two other countries where to celebrate matches. Mexico is shaping up nicely for the World Cup, and tourism comes natural to our culture.

[–] tankplanker@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That its being co hosted will backfire on the US. If it was just the US and nobody turned up they can and will blame football for that rather than their own idiocy, but because Mexico and Canada are also hosting matches if they get great attendance then its clearly an issue with the US.

If you want to go, go to the matches in Mexico or Canada, spend your money there.

[–] Witziger_Waschbaer@feddit.org 12 points 2 days ago

Haha nope, they will of course blame Mexico and Canada in that case. Or the people who prefer to go there. I think they are completely immune to any thought about the consequences of their own actions.

Oh hahahaha, now watch as you have the lowest WC attendance in history and be the first modern WC to lose money.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 105 points 2 days ago (1 children)

losing money on a sure thing would be totally on brand for donvict & co.

Ticket sales are already going so badly that they're CHEAPER on the secondhand market! Scalpers are taking a loss to get rid of them, which is pretty much unheard of for an event like a world cup.

People are even more wary of traveling to Trump's US than to the Emir's Qatar or Putin's Russia.

Cities hosting the WC almost never recoup their investments. Sure, it's a windfall for a select few, but it is a bad investment for everyone else.

I don't know why ~~you're~~ you were being downvoted, you're absolutely right.

As documented by an excellent Last Week Tonight segment and also another, FIFA and a select few rich people and corporations profiting off of lucrative contracts snatch up all the income and leave everyone else with all the expenses.

As long as MAGA policies and the walking farts responsible for them are in place/in charge, I will never again set foot on US soil. There are plenty of other places to visit.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Good. I hope everyone that can, absolutely avoids this country like the plague. If the oligarchs wanna fuck around with stealing elections, they can find out when their companies go bankrupt, and they lose their shirts.

[–] fluckx@lemmy.world 60 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Reminder that every time they say something that causes offense they say it was just a joke.

Narrator: it was not a joke

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Treating all foreigners as criminals is something he's so excited about, he just can't keep quiet about it. There probably are some people dumb enough to go to that country just to watch some sports, but they aren't going to have a good time.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 74 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I would not take such words as "jokes" anymore. I take them as an open and dire warning not to travel to the US until the government has been taken care of.

[–] meme_historian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 2 days ago (1 children)

For real. I'm not risking losing thousands of Euros on flights because some CBP asshole on a power trip denies me entry. Not to mention the very real possibility to be held at some kind of detention facility

God I h8 this man and all of the gop goons. It blows my mind that I’m 2 years older than couch fucker. Yet my mindset is a complete 180° compared to him.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 44 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Anyone who is mad enough to visit the US for attending a sports game in this day and age almost deserves that treatment. Like, are you ok?

[–] bob_lemon@feddit.org 26 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

With games taking place in both Mexico and Canada, does that make the entire US into flyover state?

Just Dumb does not joke around.

[–] HKPiax@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago

When you find "funny" how mean you can be to someone, you're just making sure everyone knows you're a fucking loser

[–] sheogorath@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Can the participating countries boycott the matches in that is held within the US?

[–] mtoboggan@feddit.org 45 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They never do. Hell, they all went to Qatar. Fifa is a system genuinely built on corruption. And although corruption is money-driven most of the time, it‘s most notably a corruption of minds and souls.

Most of the matches are in red or previous swing states, Washington is the only actually blue state on the roster, this would just be more hurting their own

[–] Saryn@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Was it so difficult to google the hosting states instead of amplifying random BS? ......

I’m just honestly so confused. Do they want to expel all non-white people and non-Christian white people, refuse entry to everyone including tourists, and basically just close themselves off from the rest of the world like a population of white hikikomori?

[–] ABetterTomorrow@lemm.ee 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Everyone, go to the world cup to beat up ICE and throw them in a prison where they can’t leave.
