I purchased a new 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross at the beginning of October. A week later, I noticed that the passenger side doors make a popping noise when they are opened. I took the car back to the dealer I purchased it from, they confirmed that the doors were making a popping noise, but the doors were still safe and secure, and they sent some kind of report to Toyota.

From what I’m understanding, they are waiting to hear back from Toyota on whether or not this is a “characteristic” of this model, meaning, in their eyes, it’s not a flaw and they will not fix it. I’ve been in contact with the service rep I worked with at my appointment and there’s still no update from Toyota. The rep said “if we EVER get a response back from Toyota, or a solution, we’d be happy to fix it.”

What I’m having difficulty finding answers to are:

  1. Does the dealer not have any kind of responsibility to fix the popping noise if Toyota never gets back to them?
  2. Does this fall under the Consumer Protection Act?
  3. The service rep said he’s been paying attention to other Corolla Cross’s and has heard the same popping noise on those - does that make it a characteristic of the vehicle even if Toyota corporate never follows up with the dealership and doesn’t confirm this?
  4. Is there anything I can do about compensation from the dealer?
