So obviously Wembanyama played in MSG tonight. I made no special effort to look up info about the game, but I was bombarded by three negative stories out of nowhere. He said MSG "isn't as big as I expected," which was actually a cutoff quote, where he finished by saying the energy is still there. The Knicks fans chanted "overrated" at him. And even the House of Highlights video is titled "The MSG lights were too bright for Wemby "

When I saw that, I thought he must have had a terrible game. His stats?

14 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block. In 30 minutes.

In other words, perfectly fine. His jump shot was off (28%), but guess what... the game before that he shot 25%. And had 13 points and 10 rebounds. And no one savaged him. Because it wasn't in toxic town.

The NY media and fans also treat Julius Randle like garbage too. I hate Kyrie Irving, for example (I called him Kevin Snake & Flake), but Kyrie is an outright Anti-Semite. Is Randle that bad of a human being? They weren't much easier on Ewing.

We had a thread a couple years ago where we looked at the stats and found that Ben Simmons actually took a nosedive in his free throw rate and percentage in front of Philly fans, apparently due to their heckling. So treating your players like crap on their homecourt can have a negative effect. And a lot of guys won't want to sign with your team and walk into that environment. Especially not kids who are just starting in the NBA and who are likely superstars of the future, and who seem to be decent people, who are getting a bad taste in their mouth from the moment they get near your team for the first time.

Nets fans make me embarrassed to be from New York.

Knicks fans cry when no superstar will sign there.

Nets fans cry because they’re the nets

[–] wujiyo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Ironically they signed 3 stars and won literally nothing, this nets fan is a just mad.

The amount of air balls this man shot

[–] SquirtMast3r@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

MSG is not big and it’s ugly and generally a shit bowl.

[–] henen14@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Wahhh wahhh the multimillionaire superstar wasn’t cheered for too much 😢

[–] SamCarter_SGC@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

how can you have all time hype before anything even happens and not expect the opposite too

[–] DigOlBick99@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Wow this was really interesting

I was at this game. He played like 🚮. I’m no Knicks fan, but dude the over rated chants were warranted.

His first made fg was in the late 3rd or something. The spurs played like shit, and he wasn’t involved at all after his first few airballs in the 1st quarter.

He saved his stat line in the last 15 mins to mediocre. Stat line doesn’t tell the whole story bro.

Saying Wemby didn't play terribly is all I needed to read to know this post was invalid lol.

You’re soft and that’s ok.

[–] EGarrett@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

When's the last time a superstar signed with the Knicks? The word for you isn't "tough," it's toxic.

[–] Constt-Fi@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why would we care about signing superstars right now?

Y'all had three and couldn't even make it out the East 😂

[–] EGarrett@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We made it out the East twice this millennium. And signed 3 superstars. Your numbers are 0 for both.

[–] AlphaGodEJ@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Lmaooo soft af

[–] ANATABAKANA@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

[–] EGarrett@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

People throw fits and downvote you, but they have no actual decent responses and if you keep telling them the truth eventually they get it. Happens with other stuff too.

What rooting for Ben Simmons does to a mf

[–] wizsoxx@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Who gives a shit its the knicks everyone knows new york fans and teams suck ass already lol its part of the deal when you play them. Those same fans would chop there own dick off if it meant getting a player like wemby.

Average poverty franchise fan

[–] AP3ISAWESOME@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The Spurs are the small market poverty franchise. The Knicks are a luxury basketball franchise and one of the highest worth in the world

[–] StudyRoom-F@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

[–] Atl-Fan_FTS@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This is soft. If you were talking about how they treat Trae then you’d have a point. If Trae can literally get spit on during Covid and be fine then I’m sure Wemby can withstand the horrible oppression of overrated chants that happen in every stadium. Not like it was an entire stadium calling him bald or screaming fuck you

[–] Mindsetsandreps@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He was not perfectly fine, he was bad. He was 1 for 9 from the field at one point and got his points in garbage time in the 4th.

The hate on Randle is warranted. He is a lazy player more often than not and crumbles mentally when things get tough. There is a multi-year sample size of this.

[–] solo118@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wemby had a bad night, his stats were padded towards the end of the game, he is allowed to have a bag game nobody is perfect. Maybe it humbled him being in the worlds most famous arena.

Say what you will about us and our city, but we have a huge fan base and if you perform you will be king of the city. The fact that Randle went from MIP/all nba/allstar to being booed the next season, then coming back to be both an all star and all nba player says quite a bit about his character. He did not back down, he came back and proved himself. I give him respect for that.

[–] EGarrett@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He is sick of the fans and turned on them himself.

A player who wins in New York would be king of the city, but you can't attract players because people don't want to be in that environment in the first place.

[–] greatfashionadvice@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I get you being concerned about how fans treat their players, and in a vacuum I agree, I think sports fans can sometimes be too cruel towards even their favorite players and teams.

But the thing is NYC is special - Knicks fans have cultivated over decades a culture of wanting our players trying their hardest and playing well even in our lottery seasons. We wear our pride on our sleeves. So when Randle does something like shrug his shoulders and slowly walk in the last minute of a close game, of course we’re gonna be upset. Cause we wanna see them succeed. You call it negative and toxic, we call it unbridled passion.

Those who get it, get it. Of course you wouldn’t though, being soft as shit

[–] EGarrett@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You were making points and sounding reasonable up until the last few words, when you couldn't resist your Knicks-fan-psychosis and lost your mind again.
