I’ve recently been talking to a friend who’s interested in watches and i’ve been thinking about getting a watch and this Seiko caught my eye, but I’ve been told to look for a mechanical watch instead of a quartz one, and i’m looking for one similar to this. Would prefer for it to be black

I have this same watch I say get it. The black automatic that I would recommend would be the Hamilton khaki field chrono the “Jack Ryan” H71626735 but it is over 1000

Oh hey, is that one of the SSB watches? I have one - the pushers for the chronograph are really satisfying. I'd love to see them do one with a 30 minute subdial instead of 60. It's cool that they're available with interesting dials.

I do also have a mechanical watch. Might get it a display caseback...

It really comes down to what you want. It's really hard to make an objective argument for a mechanical watch but it's cool that something with a balance wheel to regulate the timing can be so accurate. (All but the cheapest quartz watches are better, but still.) Generally enthusiasts are more interested in mechanical. The watches I own to do jobs are all quartz though. One's even a smartwatch.

Here is my take: at the end of the day, a watch is about it's looks and adding a sense of style to your outfit. Automatic watches are nice, but not all nice looking quartz watches have to option for an automatic version. Also, automatic watches are more expensive AND can run into other problems.

I'd say, try out some watches where you like the looks of them first, and then see if you want an automatic down the line. It IS a commitment.
