John Romero was like a rock star to many people. At the same time I'm sure many resented him and id Software's success too.

They both made great games. I get the rivalry, but hatred? Both great artists in their own right, and can be appreciated for their own reasons.

I think it would be hatred in the same sense popular youtubers make those sort of "dissing" challenges and stuff.
