What’s your budget?
If you can, spend an extra ~$100 to get at least an R730 imo. You will get more performance and the $100 will pay for itself in power savings in less than 1 year.

R710 is e-waste. Try to get at least like a r730 with ddr4 ram. An r720 is still usable, but getting long in the tooth and only ddr3.
The R710 is a great solution if you find you're not paying enough on your electric bill
This ^ /s
Might be e-waste but still good for someone just starting, not everyone pays expensive electricity
Great for the winter time!!!
It's why I still have a plasma TV.
Which I just powered on last week.
Yeah I think if you run something that uses lots of power is fine if its cold outside. You can turn of the heating and get heat from the server rack.
R710 is Gulftown era, which is going to be really lacking in both core count (max 6/socket) and single thread performance compared to something a few gens later. I wouldn't recommend buying anything older than an E5 v3/v4 platform.
Nah, the virtual kvm in the remote management on them doesn't work anymore. Go for a Rx20 series or newer. Those have a html5 based kvm.
Just get an optiplex, almost no one on here actually needs server/rack hardware.
I had my rack before I had my cluster of TinyMiniMicro's. I've ran enterprise hardware for years, but not anymore. But a rack is convenient, because my Synology is rackmount too :)
Consider what it will cost to power. The payback for getting a R730 may be under a year.
so I have decided to get a Dell Poweredge R710 instead
Also pretty old. It's from 2009..
I was able to get an R720 at auction for $70 shipped on eBay, those are the oldest I would go.
If you are going to use it for a game + file server you'd be better served by a newer lower classed model, e.g. R230, R330, R430. RX40 if you can swing it.
I was able to find one cheaper but the price of shipping is really expensive.
