I remember the hype coming out of duke, how teams were tanking for him, the “generational” talent/prospect talks. How by this time Zion would either be the straight up face of the league or one of them. Definitely a top ten player and more than likely a top 5 player by now. That basically didn’t happen, he’s been surpassed by other young players since. I legit remember several Who would you rather have going forward Luka or Zion threads. It’s crazy

I mean not that crazy it happens with all lottery picks. You either make it or you don’t..and Zion chose to make a plate with all the fixins lol

His scoring and efficiency are way down this year. Sadly I think the age of his generational athleticism is over. He simply couldn’t take care of his body enough.

Also I know it’s a small sample size but he just doesn’t look as explosive anymore.

Total unprofessionalism and what seems to be nothing but dogshit friends/family/business associates around him tend to do that. Not a smart guy to begin with, so hard to overcome all that dead weight pulling him down.

I saw a highlight of a fast break dunk the other day and nothing that made him exciting in his first few seasons was on display.

I hate to invoke the name, but...Greg Oden.

I never bought into the hype and people told me I was stupid

I've heard more about Zion's sex life than his plays lmao. And wasn't even looking for the first one.

I feel kinda vindicated atm. I knew this guy was not going to have a smooth or successful start to his career.

His overweight body, his lack of work ethic or feeling the need to work hard to compete, and his really immature early teenager type character from interviews all gave me red flags.

Being that fat is a choice, and the dude has been used to rolling out of bed bigger and strong than players and not needing to do much to be one of the best.

Only if you were delusional at the start. Only bigger guaranteed bust is Dolly Parton.

He was hyped more then Wemby before coming into league. Probably cause he was national player so more ppl followed his colleague carrier

I think a big part of the Zion hype is that it genuinely seemed like he was the best prospect since Lebron.

When talking about Wemby, the tagline is "best prospect since Zion". That doesn't get people as excited.

No, the big part of Zion hype is that he was American and played for Duke. Not in the same tier as Wemby as a prospect in any way except for the hype they had before they entered the league.

Isnt he playing good this year?

[–] bradleyvlr@alien.top 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He is playing pretty well, but his defense is terrible and he's not really like a top 5 offensive player right now. He started slow last season too, and basically after getting into shape he became a monster. We're hoping that happens this season too.

“The best prospect since lebron” type beat

[–] yung-bumstain@alien.top 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He really was let's not pretend. Only maybe AD was better. Lebron is really just different like that

Why is he playing significantly below his career averages this season? Have the injuries taken their toll? Is he still not in good shape? Or is it too early in the season to make a judgment?

[–] MrDman9202@alien.top 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We have a new offense and most of our guys are injured and hes playing his first games of basketball in 10 months......

[–] shoefly72@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He’s not taking enough shots/he’s not as involved in the offense as he should be IMO. He’s only shooting about 16 attempts per game, that should really be at 20+

[–] gcoles@alien.top 0 points 1 year ago (5 children)

It’s hard to watch when by like 24 he’s already clearly slower and doesn’t jump nearly as high.

Sky was the limit and he’s regressing before 25

[–] Proximity_Intel@alien.top 0 points 1 year ago (5 children)

The craziest thing is enes kanter was 100% right

He's Julius Randle with hops. And Julius at least shoots. Zion has Ben Simmons shot chart. Paint only.

[–] gray-pixel@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If I remember correctly, in his rookie debut he nailed 3 consecutive 3pointers. Lol

When Zion was coming to Louisiana, there was so much hype about how he was going to turn New Orleans into a basketball city. I had so many friends/coworkers asking me questions, and all becoming pretty engaged in the first season.

Then the injuries happened. The turnover in coaching. The Pelicans just kept having long stretches of players being hurt. It wasn't just Zion, but the entire team that was bogged down.

This year, Zion has the third highest minutes played on the team, but the two who are leading are Hawkins [Rookie] and Dyson [Year 2.] Most of this year has been the same story as last. Injury and after injury. Before last night's game, we had the third worst bench in PPG in the league.

Zion has been trying to be an active passer all year to soften up the lane for himself. It's just difficult with all the injuries. He's still third in the team with 4.2 assists per game. I've watched entirely too many possessions where he kicks it out to an open man, but that open man should be playing on a G-league affiliate.

It's just frustrating.

I’ve watched a lot of Pels games and he goes long stretches where he’s not really impacting the offense. Last night CJ was out and I expected more shot attempts for him and instead a lot of times he didn’t even touch the ball on several possessions in a row or just cycled it around the perimeter.

He did also do a nice job of driving and kicking out for 3 point looks when the defense collapsed. But in general he’s not really getting any post ups like he used to, and his faceup game gets stymied a lot by his lack of a jump shot and defenses collapsing on him. While you guys clearly played well as an offense and blew out the mavs, the offense in general doesn’t really cater to what Zion does well and I get why he’s having a hard time finding his shot opportunities.

Ingram is a little different because if he wants a shot he can just pound the ball and work into a midrange, and Zion can’t really do that because it’s either get to the rim or bust. Until he decides to take some jumpshots or forces some post ups, he’s gonna have a hard time.
