In a post from a few days ago, I noticed that someone mentioned that they were afraid to post about their dislike of the Tudor BB58 for fear of downvoting. You know what? The BB is a boring watch that's not worth the money, and Tudor wouldn't be half as popular as it is without the connection to Rolex. If Rolexes were as attainable as they were in past years, cut that by a factor of 10. Would you really buy a BB if the reality were that you could just save a little bit more and get a Rolex Submariner? That's my hot take. What's yours?

Don't really got a hot take but replying to yours.

Popular ≠ the best.

If Tudor = Poor man's Rolex.

Rolex is like the default rich man status brand, then Rolex is like the Tudor to AP, Patek etc..

I've seen at least 50 Rolexes in Hong Kong every day.

If Rolex was more affordable, wouldn't everyone would want an AP or a Patek or an IWC, a Jaeger le Coultre?

Rolex is not the be all end all. They are nothing but a hype beast when an objectively better watch is less money (looking at you GS) then other than exclusivity what are paying for with Rolex?

People need to stop banging on about the Christopher ward logo when its not even that bad, and there’s far worse looking things which have been stuck into watches

What did you say about my beloved bb58? REEEEEEEEEE!

Seriously, though, I love my 58 navy. The colour blows me away, and though I would like a sub, if you told me I could only have one or the other, I think I would take the 58.

I fucking hate micro brands and think they’re absolutely stupid and cringe. “Micro brand” is an attempted reframe of something with no appeal. It’s an internet, social media, dropshipping enabled trend chasing.

I don’t think established brands are value for money, or investments or whatever (another hot take I guess) but micro brands are just money down the toilet and kidding yourself.

Hot take 3: Seiko is now almost as bad as the micro brands. They were awesome when they just were what they were. Grey market 007s, 009s, Sumos, Samurais etc. Now that they’ve tried to jump on the hype train and are marketing dozens of recased 4r36 movements with bright colours, the magic is gone. They’re just another marketing machine pumping out garbage

TAG Heuer Monaco is ugly as sin. The watch may grow on some of us with time, but it is the Steve McQueen story that we eventually buy into and not a newfound appreciation for the design. It will always be an ugly piece.

I fully understand watches are a luxury item. The community seems completely out-of-touch with what constitutes 'reasonable money' or 'low-end.'

That's generally my opinion on most collectible markets anymore, though. So, what the fuck do I know?
