I am an American that looks nebulously ethnic. My skin color is light brown. I’m not African American. In the last 5 years I’ve noticed a real shift in the way American caucasians are perceived and treated in Asia and Latin America. When I am by myself I’m treated reasonably well. Usually in accordance with the local feelings towards foriegners. Lately if I am traveling with another American that happens to be caucasian my experience is completely different. We receive the extreme foreigner upcharge at restaurants and shops. My Spanish and Thai are not good but I understand the basics and we would receive side talk insults in the local language at restaurants and shops. I’ve been stopped and searched by the police more often, been the target of attempted robbery. Any thoughts or opinions about this? My experiences have been in Mexico, Cambodia, Ecuador, Thailand, Colombia & Vietnam
