He had huge red flags in terms of character, has been a compete bust and is making Jamarcus Russell’s deal look like a bargain.

Cleveland could have been a SB contender with a decent QB and instead they gave their fans this epic disaster.

If this isn’t the worst contract of all time, what signings are worse?

We don’t know yet

[–] SunriseSurprise@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Maybe in all of sports? Though some baseball ones might be worse but I forget the particularly bad ones. I don't think Strasburg would count since he did help them win a championship before injuries f'd him even if he didn't pitch much during the extension. That was as much a "thank you" extension as it was hoping he'd help them win more championships.

It's definitely the worst trade of all time. Right guys? RIGHT GUYS!? 😭

[–] Praying_Lotus@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly, if Stroud takes the Texans to a Super Bowl, even though he was not TECHNICALLY part of the trade (but Watson leaving making the Texans suck so much, allowing them to draft Stroud at no. 2), and if Anderson has a good long career, even if it’s not HOF worthy, I’d argue that the trade could rival the Herschel Walker trade as one of the worst of all time. There’s obviously other tidbits I didn’t look into regarding the trade, like other picks and what not, but I digress

I thought it went down as the worst contract of all time like two years ago

[–] MattyMatheson@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The contract isn’t bad because he did start making some strides. But I think it’s horrible that any team would pay this guy after what he did.

[–] GotThoseJukes@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s trending to be the worst contract in sports overall I feel

[–] YZYSZN1107@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dozen of women accused him of sexual assault and he bought their silence. The Browns rewarded him with a $200+M fully guaranteed contract. The moment he signed his name it became the worst contract of all time.

[–] brahbocop@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The contracts by itself is awful and probably the worst. The cap hits coming are going to hamstring the team.

The Jawalrus situation isnt even comparable to Watson imho, huge upfront (without having seen them play in the NFL) contracts for the no.1 overall pick were just the norm at the time.

Now idk if he had any character concerns before the draft because its been well over a decade but hes "just" a high level draft bust imho. We remember him for the insane storys (empty CD), cause he checked out and got fat once he realized he cant just wing it anymore at the NFL level and has to put actual work in and cause he was drafted no.1 overall and busts of this level are pretty rare at that position. Even the first overall picks that dont work out stick around as journeymen or backups for a while (D.Carr, Jameis)

Now Watson on the other hand....known character AND legal issues, huge investment in draft capital and a huge ammount of money guaranteed structured in a way that completely fucks over the franchise even if hes only mid instead of the trash weve seen from him since....that contract wins worst of all time by a margin

[–] Dr-McLuvin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As a browns fan: yes absolutely.

He would have to play like Patrick Mahomes for the guaranteed money to make any sense whatsoever.

We knew that when he was signed.

[–] Chief-_-Wiggum@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hard to see him not declining year in year.. Add in a throwing shoulder injury and 2 yrs off a full season.. Yes

[–] scalenesquare@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They were a Super Bowl contender with Watson playing injured.

[–] kermitcooper@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Haynesworth is the only contract even close to this and it’s still down the road a bit.

[–] SpawnDnD@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Not yet...what happens if they goto the superbowl next year and loose...then go again the year after an win.

How would that rate?

Have to give a little time on these things. Now, its not starting off great (not the record, him playing...he is going to not player more than half the season)

[–] RZAxlash@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Probably not. He has not had a chance to get into a groove and I feel like he’s not been nearly as bad as everybody on Reddit likes to make out. I watched 3 browns games this season and he looks at the very least competent, if obviously not up to the standard of his contract. The team around him is solid and the Browns are not just going to give up because of the way things are going, and by the way, this could still be a playoff team.

[–] Icy-Translator9124@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It might not be worse and has less guaranteed money, but the Russell Wilson contract doesn't look great.

Sean Payton is getting more out of Russ and it's looking better for them this year.

[–] SexyWampa@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes. Absolutely, as will the trade. He will be the poster child for why no owner or gm will give a fully guaranteed contract ever again.

[–] doob13s@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They’re going to waste Myles Garret’s prime lol

[–] SomewhatOKComputer@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

May have single handedly ended the Browns franchise. Worst in all of sports history.

[–] Johnny_K_Pigskin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yep. The trade to get him wasn't all that peachy either..

[–] better-call-mik3@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Barring a major turnaround yes.

Jamarcus Russell with the Raider's comes to mind...

[–] OBS_INITY@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Worst contract so far.

[–] nickstee1210@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It already has

[–] Inallahtent@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Short & respectable answer is yes.

[–] ElLoboStrikes@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I get that he is hated but to call him a bust is just not accurate. Hes 8-4 as a starter and has played just 12 games since coming back. He ended this season with 4 straight Ws. 5-1 this year. 14/9 TD/INT plus 2 rushing TD so 16/9 with Cleveland total. Yes hes had a good defense too and yes wins are an iffy stat to give QBs but if he was 0-6 this year, hed be getting crucified so lets be real.

If this were anyone else, people would be saying "oh man just as he was getting back in rhythm he gets hurt, aw shucks"

[–] periphery3@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Man if Baker would have just stayed out when he was injured and came back healthy this whole thing could have been avoided. He played like shit when he was hurt and got shipped off. Then ol gas station Jimmy decides to sign the worst contract in history. Hopefully DTR figures it out or a Veteran can be serviceable because wasting this season with this defense is an absolute crime.

[–] Kangaroo_tacos824@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Just until the browns do it again

[–] angryvet_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Contract, no. I think Jamarcus Russel takes that since they created rookie caps after that.

Worst trade. Definitely, 100%.

[–] bustavius@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He’s 5-1 this season.
