Data Hoarder

1 users here now

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

Hey everyone, my easystore 14tb I use as my NAS backup is no longer copying, so I'm looking to replace it. I saw costco is having a sale on the Seagate 14TB Expansion Desktop drives starting on Nov 21 for $149 down from $199. I have been very weary of Seagate for a while due to negative personal experience and other reports of drives failing. Is this still the case with these seagate drives? Does anyone know if these drives are slow? I have seen other capacities on this sub from other stores being reported as Ironwolf Pro drives, perhaps that's what this is? At $149, this seems extremely hard to resist. Thanks

I just shucked the Costco seagate drive that is 149.99 and it has a exos 2X14 Mach 2 drive inside. Was hoping for a ironwolf

Hey fun tip. For just a few pennies more per TB, Best Buy has a WD 18TB drive for $199. If you need a bit more storage and desk space is limited, this might be another option to consider.

Unfortunately they have been out of stock since Wednesday, but I do appreciate the tip. I was able to find a wd 14tb new being sold by another redditor for $140. My drive search has concluded

Has anyone shucked yet? What’s in the case?

There is a video on YouTube of someone shucking one. It was an Ironwolf Pro.

That’s the video I was referencing

However, in this other video the author got an ironwolf pro but mentioned in the comments they have also gotten Exos X18s before.

In the second video the box matches the box advertised from Costco

In this third video the author got an Exos, also same box advertised from Costco

That's the product but I've gone into the store and had them do some looking. Can not confirm this $149 deal for Phoenix area anyway. If you see it for that price, snag it! Grab 2.

I’m in Southern California and my mailer said online only

Did you register it and check the warranty period? If so, RMA the failed drive back to Seagate. They've gotten really good at replacing failed Exos drives within the warranty period. Of the 24 Exos drives I have spinning: 4 RMAs in the last 4 years. One failure was for a previously RMA'd drive.

Thanks for the info, my failed drive is a WD easystore out of warranty.

ugh, sorry to hear that.

Had a variety of seagate Exos x16, x18, and Ironwolf drives shucked from expansion desktop drives over the last few years. They’ve worked well enough for home lab and media server use. failure rate not bad enough to complain about.
