Obviously $5M is a lot of money, but for a lot of middle class people like myself this is attainable in a lifetime after saving for a while. Curious what each person’s choice would be for a “grail watch” that isn’t ridiculously expensive.

Ming GMT 22.01 Black Bay 58 925 Tank Must

Tudor black bay

SEIKO SCVE003. IMO it’s a beautiful watch.

Double fisting Oris Divers 65 cotton candy, one pink and one blue. There's something about bronze watches that come on bronze bracelets and not chintzy NATO straps.

That or a Rado Captain Cook on a beads of rice bracelet

D. Dornblueth and Sohm 99.0. You will have a hand made watch just for you.

[–] 9operational@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Oris Propilot X, the smaller one in either grey or salmon. It's about £2400.

[–] jorsiem@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Used Speedy? If you don't mind winding.

[–] Mayor_of_BBQ@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

preowned Aquaterra is the real answer here.

[–] MrKorakis@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

For me it would be Oris.
The X cervo volante (ref: 01 754 7779 4065) or the Big Crown Calibre 473 (ref:
01 473 7786 4065-07 5 19 22FC )

My grail was a navy Black Bay 58. Fortunate enough to have picked one up new a few weeks ago. Terrific watch

Longines Spirit Zulu GMT in 39mm.

[–] AelliotA1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Hentschel H1 Klassik handmade artisanal watchmaking from Hamburg,. possibly the most accessible piece unique watches.

[–] iLikeSaints@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Be an outlier and get an Oceanus. If you really want a mechanical then try a Damasko!

[–] Poloyatonki@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Black Bay 58 Heritage

[–] Von_Lehmann@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Honestly that's more money than I would probably feel comfortable wearing, but I guess I would get a Sinn EZM 3F or an Oris Cervo Volante blue

[–] Lex-Ruby@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

ORIS Kermit obviously

[–] Smart_Salt_1541@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Speedmaster 38, Longines Hydroconquest or a decent Breitling

[–] nonastyfuckwits@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Casio G Shock Mudman with positive display but green color

[–] WiseguyPokerClub@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just saw a GMT Master II with black bezel and it was only $4950. It was at a Jewelry store. Looked brand new.

[–] FluffyBushmonsta@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I would go for a Breitling super ocean, a tag or if you were to bump it up to €6000 a Omega seamaster or 38mm speedmaster.

[–] axelbrbr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Frederique Constant Moonphase with Eastern Arabic numbers. It’s my grail watch since forever, but only ~30 of these were made.

[–] NoEmu2398@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean. That's pushing the budget a bit but I'm gonna go with it anyways.

[–] crispyTacoTrain@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I badly want a Rado Captain Cook

[–] WiseguyPokerClub@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bob's Watches has Rolex, Omega and Tissot all for 5k and under. Some good ones too.

[–] WhiskeyBRZ@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Seiko Astron chronograph. Solar powered and automatically updates time via GPS. Super practical

[–] noodle518@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Tudor black bay 925, it's a strap monster. Amazingly underrated dive watch hiding behind the obvious glory of the the black bay 58. Best nato strap from any manufacture and a 925 silver case. The toupee dial and bezel go with everything

[–] firelord237@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I like the max bill way too much, so that one.

[–] amarrero@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Probably a gilt Black Bay 58. In terms of a GADA watch, it can pretty much do everything but the dressiest of dressy occasions. I’d definitely wear it with a suit and tie (short of black-tie events).

If I wanted something dressier but could still be used on a regular basis, I’d get a Cartier Santos-Dumont in quartz. Certainly can’t jump into a pool with that but can pretty much go from t-shirt and jeans to black-tie. And yes, I’m aware that you aren’t supposed to wear a watch with a tuxedo.

With the remaining budget, buy a Casio or a G-Shock as your regular beater watch.

[–] Mr_Tinos91@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I would go with a cw bel canto maybe.

I have a penchant for Soviet watches so my choice would be the Raketa Avant-Garde 2079. It's €1650 https://raketa.com/w/en/product/raketa-avant-garde-0279/

They also make the Copernicus watch but you can find restored soviet watches for much less https://raketa.com/w/en/product/raketa-copernicus-0280/
